On the one hand, I understand that I can't just have all the things I want for free. On the other, it is manifestly the case that I want to have all the things I want for free. Conundrum!

I can't imagine the nightmare that's going to come out of this regulation in terms of compliant vs. semi-compliant internet providers. The kind of internet you'll be able to access will be regulated by geography and the service type you're paying for; we'll all wind up paying excise taxes to cover pirates, media will have every reason to release unlimited crap instead of limited awesome, third-world nations will have virtually no access to any cultural artefacts from outside their own borders, and maintenance of websites and links will be so labour-intensive that content production will fall through the floor.

Or, maybe, it'll be okay. In any event, it'll be a good time to be a copyright litigator, I guess.

Well, I wouldn exactly compare Bill's pumpkin (not sure if you were actually spelling it wrong on purpose... then again, you always spell it "rediculous" when it's actually "ridiculous") to something that was artistically imagined and created by someone that you're making money off of without sharing with them. I hope that much of the creative arts I have devoted so much to so far are worth considerably more than a comparison to an expendable vegetable ( ... )

But it's not the artists who are pushing for this, it's the US and industry. The artists organizations are, from what I have seen, overwhelmingly against this bill.

If only I could really believe that the creative commons has a chance to work. Copyright laws made for the internet would be so much better than trying to enforce old ones.

Bottom line to me is that if piracy is such a huge problem as all this, then we need to rethink how the industry works. If piracy has such a more convenient delivery system, massive amounts of regulation is a tremendous waste of money and about the least graceful solution possible. Piracy is largely an indicator that industry is behind the times.

I just hope we don't get stuck with some outmoded piece of legislation that holds actual progress back.

I still haven't seen the text of the Bill, nor anyone's blow by blow of what it actually means. I'm sure I won't like it, but I'd really like to know what the heck it is, in case its not as bad as I'm imagining.
