Someone, somewhere, is getting crucified for this film. It's one thing to make a film that kinda flops and doesn't make a boatload of money. It's quite another to make a film that will never break even, and then it's quite another to make a film that has lost money forever.
The people who put money into this project will never see that money again. It is gone forever. This project has lost at least forty million dollars, and that's going to come out of someone's ass!
Sometimes Eddie Murphy hits it, and sometimes he really REALLY does not.
This is the guy. He's been involved in some projects, but not one of them has any real artistic credibility to it. The dude's clearly in it for the money, and he fucking flubbed on this one.
Fortunately for him he's been on some projects that have made some real money, like AvP and Night at the Museum, but after "Meet Dave" and "Night at the Museam 2" this guy's going to be hurting a little bit, I think.
On the up side, I still don't think it can mathematically out-lose The Adventures of Pluto Nash. I say this, because by all accounts, that movie lost more than this one cost. ($110m to make + $20m to market = $130m - $7m Worldwide Box Office (total, not opening weekend) - $25m DVD = $98m lost)
Yeah... but the films that have been top grossing have a bit more credibility to them frankly. I know "Nutty Professor" doesn't SOUND credible, but that film was attached to almost fifty years of history, as was "Dr. DoLittle."
"Pluto Nash" and "Meet Dave" are just fucking shlock that's clearly designed to attempt to cash in on Eddie Murphy's name and producers don't realize that movie goers are smarter then that. They know when a movie is going to be shitty or not. (Before this dissolves into a "Movie goers are smart eh?" conversation, I mean smart in a "I know when something is shit, and I just want to see tits and explosions while getting a handjob from my girlfriend" smart not "That was a credible artistic endevor" smart.)
He said in his Inside the Actor's Studio thing that he goes out of his way to avoid reviews because they can hurt his feelings. So, explanation for this disturbing trend, perhaps?

Straight up... "This looks like fun and I'm rich so what do I care what people think."
I don't really fault Eddie Murphy for these films. Dude has always done what seemed like a fun thing to do. His motivations for acting and working in films have always revolved around "What seems like fun". Always.
Who I do fault are the idiots who seem to think that films like these are going to gain any traction whatsoever.
I wouldn't be too suprised if the studios were sucking it up and calling these "Training Movies".
Actually, I think its pretty simple. "Is the movie intended to be mainly marketed to children?" If yes, it has the potential to make money. If not, then you roll the dice.... against some pretty bad odds.
