Interviews

Interviewing someone for my team today, and again on Thursday.

I've come to the conclusion that I have a burning hatred for outsourcing. I will do my best not to let that color my interview of these guys, but I don't fucking see the point of hiring a couple guys in the Ukraine, when there are people who need jobs in my time zone.

Speaking as someone who works remotely, I back you completely on this. And I do because I know that I am the exception to the rule - remote/outsourced people aren't "present" in a way that can integrate into a team. If you can't connect, you can't know each other's strengths and weaknesses and the best way to compliment each other.

I bust my ass to be present to the point where people tell me it's like I'm actually in the office out in Chicago. I can do that. Most people can't. Listen to your gut on this one - not just because local folk should get the shot, but for the health of your team, IMHO. :)

The point of overseas outsourcing is that fer-ner engineers are much cheaper than local talent. The people who sign the checks either don't notice the difference in quality or don't care.
