Parental Failure

Since Tuesday, we have been visited by our 11 year old nephew, Hunter. I must say that while it's going well and he is having fun...I have serious doubts about one of two things:

1. Either his parents have taught him NOTHING
2. I suck as a parent.

Let me state why I think this.

Hunter has been very polite: asks for things, listens for the most part, is your typical 11 year old who thinks he knows everything, hates his teachers because they don't know anything and nothing I would ever say at his age because I was a goody two shoes.

Unfortunately, this gives me time to judge my brother's and his wife's parenting skills. So far I have learned the following:

1. I'm dramatic about my pain issue (his mother's words....not his).

2. he refuses to chew with his mouth closed. It's a huge big peeve of mind because I find it trashy to eat with your mouth open and for some reason the snob in me thinks it means you're lower class if you do that. He's 11, but I do judge his parents for this.

3. He refuses to get perfect attendance because he doesn't want to be made fun of. This is a problem because it shows he bows to peer pressure very easily. This scares me because I think he'll have it rough as a teenager then. Caring more about what others think about him than what he will do to his life.

Also discussing politics with him is funny. He's 11 so he thinks he knows everything when he parrots what he hears. And sadly he hears the words of the TEA PARTY (the insane side).

We had an incident today at PETSMART which I am not over. It's not a huge issue for anyone else but me because I feel like I failed. While walking to the car, Hunter announced he found a $100 bill. I thought he was joking till I saw it.

I told him that it would be nice to turn it into the store to make sure that if anyone lost money they could easily find it and it would be the right thing to do.

Me: We should turn it in.
Hunter: But, I found it.
Me: It's not your money and someone could be missing it.
Hunter: Yeah, but I found it.
Me: It's stealing.
Hunter: No, it's not if you found it on the ground after someone dropped it.

I told him my thoughts and left it up to him what to do because he is 11 and should make his own choices. He kept the $100 bill and I was upset because I thought it showed what type of morals his parents were teaching him. I would never do that when I was his age. I would turn in the money and make sure who ever got it got it.

I can't help but feel I made a huge mistake and really handled that situation wrong. So of course I exaggerate that and now think that I would do that in every situation and I would suck. *SIGH*
