Irene/Belinda

"Irene! Hoy, Irene!"

Irene turned to see a girl running towards her, slightly painty fingers giving an indication to her student course.

"Belinda! How fantastic to see you!"

Belinda ran a hand over her hair in an attempt to neaten it after her helter-skelter chase.

"I've been waiting an hour for you in Anatole's Cafe."

Irene frowned.

"But that's not till Tuesday, is it? And at 4pm."

"It is Tuesday, you goose! And we agreed on 2 o'clock. We even checked each other's diaries after last time's mess up!"

But Irene had focused only on the first part of Belinda's statement.

"It's Tuesday? Oh help, I've missed my piano lesson - again. Why didn't anyone tell me?"

"Probably they think you know the days of the week," grinned Belinda. "Where's Alicia when you need her?!"

"Oh, I know," sighed Irene. "University's not like Malory Towers. Do you know, I miss the old place sometimes."

"Me too," agreed Belinda, suddenly serious.

"You do?"

Belinda nodded.

"For a start it was a lot easier to get hold of you! We only had a school to get lost in, not a whole city; and whatever else we knew we'd see each other at bedtime."

"Too true, or Matron would have something to say," laughed Irene.

"That's something else I miss, though."

"What, Matron?"

"No." Belinda took a breath. "Bedtime. When we'd curl up together in a heap and..."

"But university isn't like that," interrupted Irene hurriedly.

"No." Belinda paused. "Do you ever wish it was?"

"No!" But it was Irene's turn to hesitate. "No," she said again softly. "It wouldn't be the same without you."

And impulsively she put her arms around Belinda, who rested her head on that familiar shoulder, uncaring of the staring passers-by.

"Nothing," whispered Irene; "nothing's the same without you."
