  Gravity
Pairing: Jack/Ten
Rating: PG
Word Count: 500
Warnings: Angst

I suppose something always brings me back to you. How can I explain it in words you’ll understand? You never were very good at this sort of thing, were you? (Or were you? Is that why you forgive Him for all the horrible things he’s done, but can’t manage to see past this curse that was thrust upon me by an ignorant, foolish child?)

You know why I love you? (I know you don’t need me to tell you I love you) You’re fragile. Yes, I know you think you’re strong. You think you can balance the entire universe on those skinny shoulders of yours, but really you’re so fractured it’s a miracle you manage to keep the pieces together. I was fooled by the tough guy act at first. You had me well and truly duped, right up until those last moments at the game station. You know, I really thought you could pull that trigger and save them all. And then I came to life at the end of the universe. I woke up and the first thing I saw were those cold eyes of yours. Before I saw the black, starless sky, before I even noticed Martha crouched beside me, I looked into you, and I could see the cracks. You were doing your best impression of the Timelord Unmoved, but I could see your foundations crumbling underneath, and I fell in love with you all over again, in spite of myself. And you know what’s crazy? I’m still trying protect you from yourself. I can’t help it, I would give anything, anything, to just drown in your love without feeling the rain.

It’s like you’re a black hole. (That’s a nice, Timelord-y metaphor.) You’re the black hole at the center of a galaxy, and people just can’t help but fall toward you. You have your own gravity. And god help us, we all fall into orbit one by one, forming this strange cloud of unrequited love that follows you across the universe.

It’s not your fault, of course. You can’t help it. You don’t even seem to realize the effect you have on the people around you. It’s our fault, really. My fault. I fooled myself into thinking you were the shining light in my life, the sun around which I was destined to revolve. And it’s ok to love a sun. Suns are big and beautiful, and no, you can’t touch them, but they can’t touch you either, can they? They just go on burning, and you can bask forever in their light.

But a person can’t love a black hole without being crushed.

And, god help me, I still can’t stop myself from falling into your gravity.
