Google is never about creating more crap that already infests our lifestyles.

They are about taking a concept and making it better, in the hopes of making all others obsolete and thus creating a more unified, more efficient communication service.

Think about it, if there were 1 utility infinitely better than all others, everyone would use it. So instead of logging on to 50 IM utilities, because some of your friends use one while others use another, you just might be able to use only one.

in theory.. but people on AOL will never give up the built in IM client

same battle with people who use MSN/Hotmail.

the root problem is that while google may make a better im client its not going to be leaps and bounds above the competion.. now if google buys out trillian and ties into that I'd be their biggest fan, but it wont happen.. IM can't be vastly improved really. MSN has fans because of the new goofy animations and backgrounds, AIM has fans because everyone was using AOL and its just gone from there, Yahoo is nice with the music player built in. and ICQ was nifty way way back when but drives me nuts now.

If google can tie all those things together, have one master app that does it all like trillian and all the extra features, can talk to all the other service, isn't a memory hog, then I'll think about it.. till then I'd rather buy the tril 3.0 and use it to connect to the Gtalk service.

Just because they're creating a new messaging program does not mean you have to use it. Then again...I do need to consider who I'm talking to here...
