I'm not into Harry Potter (fantasy isn't my genre anymore), but I have read a few of the books. They're extremely well-written and creative.
I think that the influx of interest in fantasy is fueled by the classics turned into movies. However, Tolkien was around well before the movies were made, and I think that Harry Potter will be around well after some of the interest in fantasy fades a little.
The claims made in the Times are ridiculous. If those arguments were true, I'd be an engineering major and running a transcontinental railroad...
