Well, I have an organic final Monday, a 20 page term paper due Tuesday, and two finals on Wednesday...so why not use this time to post theological and literary philosophizing?  Good plan.

I'm actually going to start with the literary stuff because I just got a solid start on my lit paper for Modernism.  Also, I think it ties nicely with whatever my ( Read more... )

"I was just consumed in this feeling of awe, and wonder, and I was humbled, and I was at a (mental) place of reverent peace. This might be incoherent; I don't know how to describe it. In my mind it is similar to when Christians want to worship their God for the sheer joy of worship, not to appease Him or appeal to Him (though I may be misinterpreting that state of mind)."

You are definitely NOT misinterpreting Christianity here. Although there are those who want something out of worship, it's not why we worship God. We worship Him for who He is. Also, He doesn't need us to praise Him, but our worship - our no strings attached admiration - pleases Him.

Do you have a copy of the Bible? If not, I can send one to you (it would be a free NIV translation from my church). I know you're not sure about God but I think you'd like to know more about Christianity (since you're second guessing yourself above). Let me know if I've misinterpreted. :-)

I own a copy of the Bible (NRSV), actually, and I began reading it last summer. I hope to continue my reading this summer. I am actually fairly confident in my general knowledge of Christianity, but I do not think it is fair of me to make assumptions or generalizations about the emotions involved when Christians contemplate/worship their God; I do not want to make any sort of unfair or offensive claims, and this is why I include disclaimers when I do make assertions about Christianity. Just to let people know that I am aware of the limitations of my own thought process and experience.

I am taking a class next semester called Origins of Christianity, about which I am pretty excited.
