I have a question in regards to my tattoo. The girl who did it told me to stay our of water for 6-8 weeks and to even be careful in the shower -- yet she didn't tell me anything about sun protection other than to put lots of sun screen on. Now, I don't doubt that she knows what she's talking about .. but I'm wondering if she's maybe exaggerating ( Read more... )

k, you NEED to wash it. antibacterial soap or a mixture of salt water. granted, you shouldn't be scrubbing massively at it or anything. be careful about lotions with lanolin (extract from wool) because they will lift the ink and are therefore bad. BUT, gently applying sunscreen that's not all fragranced and stuff will protect the healing skin from sun damage, just as you would any other healing skin. some brand called "A&D ointment" is good i guess for general lotion stuff. NO vaseline cause that will make things ick ( ... )

thanks man! because 2 of my friends have tattoos and have both told me different things .. but you sound like you know what you're talking about. i really didn't understand the whole 6-8 weeks either, especially since she wants me to come back in 3 weeks for the colour ..

is it supposed to peel/flake a lot? i've been using lanolin free lotion and washing it 3 times a day (or so .. in the morning, sometimes at work and then before bed) and then today it started flaking massively. :/

yes. that means its starting to heal. the most common phrase i hear when people are talking about new tattoos is "is it peeling yet?" so it is a good thing. :)

They don't want you in the water because of the chemicals. I couldn't go in my boyfriends hot tub for a while because of it, nor could I go to the pool.
The chemicals in the water can be bad for it. I would say avoid the water for at least a week and then, based on your healing, decide whether or not you want to go :)

yeah .. sometimes i think people are overly protective .. but i mean, i'm taking care of it .. you know, they even told me not to let the water from my shower get on it too much .. i'm like, "dude, how do i wash my hair then?"
