Whenever I read about a miracle cure like this -- one that involves using a drug in a way that's wildly different from what it was intended for -- my first reaction is always, "What made them think to try something like that?"

I mean, was it an accident? Were they trying to give some Alzheimer's patient an epidural, only they grabbed the wrong medicine, and then one end of the gurney the patient was on collapsed? Or did someone just say, "Hey, this old geezer doesn't remember his own name -- let's just inject random drugs into his spinal column and see what happens"?

If it really works, though, it's good news for my dad and aunts... both of their parents had Alzheimer's.

I join you in wondering why it was used. Hypothetically, it makes sense, but it seems the sort of thing where the stars come together.

I posted the story/link in a diary entry over at DKos (along with some stuff about how things like this make me hopeful for my father, who has fibromyalgia), and one of the comments it generated was written by someone whose father was just diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

Viagra was a side-effect gone right. Takes all kinds.
