August recs, part two

Aug 30, 2015 15:36

Okay, here's the second part. You may notice that this post only has one highlighted rec whereas tomorrow's post will have LOTS. I could have gone in an arranged them so that they were more evenly spread, but to be honest, I don't have the energy. So, enjoy them! They're a muddle, as is now tradition.

Phil spends his days limping around his brewery, brewing delicious malty and hoppy goodness for his friends and neighbors. He's content. The scruffy, blue-eyed nerfherder that's Shield Securities' latest hire is no cause for alarm, because they're just friends. Really.

It's not exactly unprecedented for people to have wings, claws, or metal arms around here. Bucky can be forgiven for assuming Sam's wings weren't meant to be removeable. Bucky can, Sam assures him, be forgiven for a lot of other things as well. Sam appreciates the concern, though.

Months later, when he’s sitting on the bench in the park in Washington D.C. he knows Steve Rogers jogs in, when Steve stops dead in his tracks looking like he saw a ghost (and really, he did), the first words out of his mouth are, “Have you been to Brooklyn lately?”

Rec Of The Week - seven things you don't tell your best friend before dying by

One last truth, for the road.
biggrstaffbunch does gorgeous prose poetry and this is one of their best, inspired by Not Easily Conquered, so fans of that (or of Steve/Bucky in general) should check it out.

Speeding out of town in a stolen vehicle, Peggy swears under her breath. All she saw of the gunman was a flash of something metal catching the sun, and a dark blur moving quicker than she thought possible.
When she gets back to the States, she will start a file that will sit, unregarded, in the bottom of her desk for several years. One day, a man whose name used to be Barnes will see her face in a photograph, and the word he will say will be ‘Target’, and things will slot into place at last.

Carol can't help it; she breaks out laughing, and as she does Janet smiles at her, smiles down at her, which is both bizarrely familiar and completely new. Carol buries her face in her hands and laughs and laughs until she feels Janet's hands around her, warm and careful, cupping her loosely, the way she might hold a butterfly.

Steve almost didn't look up as he crossed the Brooklyn Bridge that afternoon, so used to staring down at his own feet and being lost in his own thoughts that he could have passed the guy by entirely, but he did look up. And his life changed forever.

Fitz is almost one hundred percent sure that he and Mack are friends, but he’s eighty percent sure that friends don’t share beds. Still, that's what keeps happening, and he's not exactly complaining.

When Mac pulls the finger out Leo lets out a little disappointed whine. “Just a second, sweetheart,” he says with a small smile, kissing the inside of Leo's thigh. “Need some lube.”
“Already have lube,” Leo protests and Mac snorts as he slicks up his fingers some more.
“And I'm sayin' we need more,” he says with a gentle nip to Leo's hip that makes him jump and glare. “Let the experts do their job and enjoy the ride, yeah?”

Bucky is Steve's guardian angel. When he's taken after losing his wings, Steve must go on a journey to save him. Urban fantasy AU.
“But I'll protect you,” the stranger says, and that's when something strikes through Steve, bright and loud, and when he looks at the stranger-just a boy, taller than himself, but probably younger-he sees fire and wings.

Bucky straightened and took another bite of the apple, then grinned at Steve as he chewed and swallowed. It was one of his artful ones, the kind he'd used on teachers and parents and the girls he wanted to impress before the War. The kind he didn't mean. "You tryin' to make me into an angel, Stevie?"
"Now why would I do that?" Steve smiled at Bucky's laugh, then very carefully turned back to the drawing. He didn't hold the pencil too tightly and snap it, or press too hard and rip the paper.
He very carefully didn't say, you used to be one.
(Or, the eleventy-billionth "Bucky is a Guardian Angel" fic that nobody asked for.)

“You know, I have never seen anything like this in my whole damn life,” he says. “And I have seen a lot of shit. Your boyfriend gets stuck in the polar ice cap for seventy years and comes out brand spanking new, and you-nothing.

Bucky gets found. It doesn't happen the way you'd expect.

Shoeless Joe and the Sunshine Kid by

When Bucky was sufficiently recovered, he and Steve took a trip. They saw the baseball hall of fame. They saw a clear blue lake. They saw the countryside, with clumps of trees in many colors.

There was a thick wad of cash on the stand beside the door, the clock was ticking closer and closer to nine, and Bucky was already regretting this decision. He fell onto the sofa, the tense feeling of anxiety twisting and clenching in his gut. It pulled him forward, pulled his hands to grip into his hair and dragged a low groan from his throat.
What the hell had made him think this would be a good idea?
