Personality: ‘Determined’ is the understatement of the century for Simon. Deeply influenced by Kamina, the man who was like his brother, Simon is a man who believes he’s capable of anything. As a young boy following Kamina’s lead, he began to have a powerful desire to help win humanity’s freedom, and this carries through in his attitude. Having overcome his fear of battle, he’s become quite the respected man- willing to fight and die for humanity’s sake even while branded a war criminal sentenced to death by the government that he helped to create. He cares deeply about people at large, and though he’s a bit naïve and awkward when it comes to romance, Simon is strong-willed and always willing to impart his wisdom to others. Due to this, he’s prone to monologues and over-the top dialogue.
Simon believes that he can do anything with the strength of his determination- even going to the moon, as Kamina dreamed. He manages to make this and more possible for himself by sheer strength of will. Although it’s rarely if ever dealt with in series, Simon’s personality is something that other people might find to be rather tiring. He’s that insufferable hero type: the kind of guy who marches straight into something because he believes it’s the ‘manly’ thing to do- to fight a man face to face on equal footing. At the same time, Simon is highly unlikely to fight someone hand to hand. In the end, the only thing he’s honestly skilled at being the use of his drill, he’s no soldier. He spends the entire series driven by luck and his desire to achieve humanity’s freedom.
The leader of Team Dai-Gurren lives with the phrase “Kick logic to the curb!” as a catch phrase, and it shows in his handling of any situation. Simon is extremely impulsive- likely to throw himself headlong into even the most dangerous of situations on nothing but the pure belief that he MUST come out on the other side. Nothing gives him strength like the friends that he surrounds himself with, and if there is something to protect, Simon really might be capable of anything.
Powers/Abilities: The Spiral Power. It is an ability that technically all humans are capable of because they are ‘Spiral beings’. This is in reference to humanity’s ability to evolve and adapt. He is also technically the most powerful character in the Gurren Lagann universe, because of his level of control over his power and the power itself (being a spiral) is infinite.
Describing the power’s effects is a bit difficult, as Simon uses it for a variety of purposes and results throughout the series. He can release massive beams of energy both in and out of his mech- the Lagann. It also gives him over the top speed and strength. Within the Lagann is where the Spiral power gives him the most to work with. He can transform the mech’s arms into huge, nearly unbreakable drills. When combined with another mech, such as Kamina and later Viral’s Gurren, This power becomes even more unstoppable. He is capable of overriding almost any system that his mech combines with and therefore take over it.
The only limit on his powers is himself- and his desire to protect people. As a youth, Simon often was unable to use his power to its full potential due to these emotional shortcomings.
Prose sample: This was new. And on most days, new wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. This place was rather… Different though. It was like the under ground cities that Simon remembered from seven years back. Specifically, he was reminded of the village that the Beastman general Guame ran. It had been a village of nothing but young girls who were groomed to belong in Lord Genome’s twisted harem. It was some weird, backwards form of karma. Or maybe a cosmic joke- he wasn’t sure. Now he was a part of the harem, and there was no getting shipped off to your doom. Having Viral around? It was a plus to the nasty buzzing in his head- something like he was hungry and hadn’t eaten but… That couldn’t be it. He was scraping up enough for now. The handouts from sympathizers wouldn’t last long though, especially not in a city like this one.
Sometimes, his new lifestyle reminded him of the one he’d glimpsed in his dream- in his nightmare of a groveling Kamina and their life as thieves. Sometimes, he wondered if he’d be happier that way. It only took a moment every time for him to realize how entirely idiotic that notion was. There was no way that he- that Simon the Digger- could be happy in that kind of world.
It was why he’d gone to seek out his partner on this particular day and why he’d probably do it again.
“There’s got to be a way to Loki.” He was pacing, dark eyes narrowed. For Simon, there’d never been something that he couldn’t drill through- he’d fought and won against the god of the universe itself. If he hadn’t been in the moment- a very determination driven Team Dai-Gurren moment- then he might have felt a little bad for Viral having to listen to his ranting day after day. It was sadly, one of the few things keeping him sane.
“There’s never been anything that we couldn’t accomplish! It may be just us, but we’re still Team Dai-Gurren, and Team Dai-Gurren never gives up! Nothing- nothing’s ever stopped us, Viral.” That was what it came down to; He just had to remind them again. This was like when Kamina had been lost- like the time he’d spent unable to function due to the overwhelming grief. He’d overcome that- and he’d defeated the Spiral King! At night, he worried about Nia. He worried about Yoko and the others. But he knew that the other Universe Simon would rescue her and protect them. He knew it.
“We might not be able to get back. I realize that much. But… We have to! There’s no such thing as can’t! Forget logic- we’ll kick it to the curb.” Simon clenched his fists. “We’re Team Dai-Gurren, damnit! Who the hell do they think I am?!” Deep blue strands shrouded his eyes. He hoped that his friend would believe harder than he could right now. This city had already taken so much out of him in such a short time. Simon couldn’t yet even imagine how much more Loki’s twisted schemes would take from him by the end.
