I just read a paper in an applied linguistics handbook about how discourse in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean tends to rely a great deal on culturally-salient examples, but unlike Western writing, the CJK writing tradition tends not to state the significance of the examples. I just watched Li Ao's 2004 piece about the Tiananmen Square Massacre, hoping to get some insight into what Chinese-speaking historians think about the incident.
His conclusion, what he really wanted to say about what we can learn from the incident, is the following:
"一切中國的苦惱 都是美國帶來的"

I stayed in for a lot of the day because I slept in after staying up most of the night finishing The Gods Themselves. It was my first time reading Asimov, and I loved it. I should have checked more books out of the library ( Read more... ) -

The registrar is denying me satisfaction, and I don't like it one bit. The catalog will probably become available just as my neighbor enters my room to drag me to tonight's (!) meeting.

The familiar feeling of spring is back. It's a little bit easier to relax, and a little bit more difficult to concentrate.
I just stayed up most of the night finishing Pride and Prejudice. Why did I always think that I wouldn't enjoy that book? I loved it. I could see everything that was going on so clearly in my imagination ( Read more... ) -
