So does that mean I have to post a similar message on my livejournal? I can't knit well enough for this, so is it okay if I draw or paint gifts instead?

Yup, now you should post on your journal. And it doesn't have to be knitting, just anything handmade. So drawing or painting or whatever medium you want works.
