“Hey did you see the new kid yet?” Jack looked up from the homework he forgot about over the weekend. It’s the third month of school, and you would think he’d be remembering when he had homework now.He looked at Matt, the pitcher on the baseball team. He was chewing on his lip ring and staring ahead of him. Jack raised an eyebrow and followed his gaze to a boy who was sitting two rows in front of them. All Jack could see was the back of his head, and how his legs were bouncing up and down constantly.

“Grieco said he’s really quiet, wouldn’t even answer the teacher when she called on him to talk about himself.” Matt whispered, a small blush coating his cheeks at the mention of Grieco, captain of the swim team.

Jack didn’t really talk to people who didn’t play sports.

“He’s way to tiny too play any sports, he’s probably one of those art freaks who think they’re better then everyone.” Danny, the catcher on the baseball team, whispered from behind Matt, leaning forward to hear them better. Matt snorted, his gaze going back to the new kid while Jack just rolled his eyes and tried to focus on finishing his homework.

The rest of the English class seemed to go by quickly. Jack didn’t really pay attention, once again, too busy thinking about the upcoming game. He also caught himself staring at the back of the new kids head, who’s name he learned was Alex. He didn’t catch a glimpse of his face once through the class, which sucked because he wanted to see what the new kid looked like.

“Come on Jacky boy. Gym time.” Danny said with a smile. Jack grinned, basically every single one of his friends were in his gym class, and it was the one class he actually did amazing in - unlike math and English.

He met up with Rian and Zack in the changing rooms, both boys greeting him with ‘man hugs’ before they all changed into the mandatory gym outfits, Jack throwing it over his undershirt. They all walked into the gym, half the class already there and starting the three laps they had to run at the beginning at each class.

“Dawson! Merrick! Get running! Barakat get your ass over here!” The gym teacher, aka coach, yelled across the gym. Jack squinted his eyes over to coach, everything slightly blurry because his contacts weren’t doing much for him anymore, he could make out coach and another figure, it wasn’t until he jogged close enough he saw the small kid standing next to coach.

“Jack, this is Alec.” Coach started and Jack looked at the boy, noticing now he wasn’t much shorter then him, probably only an inch or two smaller then his own 6’2 figure. But jesus christ he was thin. The boy - Alec - kept his eye’s on his shoes, hands shoved in the pockets of his skin tight pants.

Alex kept his eyes down, not wanting to correct the coach even though he was saying his name wrong. He didn’t see the face of the other person who had joined them, but his voice sent a small shiver down his back.

“I want you to be his partner for today and maybe tomorrow on anything, just until he gets used to our routines. You’re doing the best in the class so it’s okay if you don’t do so good for few days.” Coach muttered. Jack knew he didn’t like new kids in his class, especially ones who weren’t on any sports teams. So Jack just nodded, not really caring about having to help someone out for a few days.

“Good. Alec, if you have any questions just ask Jack here, he’ll help you out with anything.” Coach said, then he blew his whistle. Alex sighed lightly, this Jack character shuffling his feet lightly. Alex just kept his head down.

“Okay ladies, get in your lines, today we’re doing suicides. Get ready.” He yelled, half the class groaned, then the actual basketball players cheered, already being used to doing suicides almost everyday.

“Jack you sit out with Alec today and just catch him up on everything.” He leaned in a little closer to Jack, trying to keep his voice low so ‘Alec’ wouldn’t hear. But Alex did hear of course.

“And see if he’s good enough for any sports teams.” He muttered, a scoff at the end. Jack nodded, smiling lightly at ‘Alec’. Alex just avoided his gaze. Jack raised an eyebrow and started walking over to the bleachers, not bothering to see if ‘Alec’ was following him. Alex reluctantly followed after him, choosing to sit a little farther away from the boy.

Jack rolled his eyes, not enjoying the attitude he was getting already from the new kid. He hadn’t even said one word to the kid and he was already treating him like shit.

“Okay, so basically, you’ve met coach. He’s the coach for every possible sports team on the school, except gymnastics and cheerleading, if you can even call that a sport.” Jack said, sending a crooked smile towards the boy. The guy might be an asshole, but that didn’t mean Jack was.

Alex watched Jack talk, noticing the way he couldn’t keep his eyes or hands still. His eyes followed people running back and forth and he kept moving his hands from his legs to his hair to behind him and back. Jack caught Alex watching him; he quickly looked away, a blush on his face.

Jack grinned at that, he looked cute when he blushed. Jack shook his head after that thought. Okay Jack, Zack’s the gay one, not you.

“My name’s Alex.” Alex mumbled out, wanting the other boy to know his real name. Jack’s head snapped back to Alex, his small voice breaking through the sound’s of the running feet in the gym.

“Alex? Sorry about that, took Coach making me captain for him to get my name right.” Jack said with a laugh. Alex’s face dropped again, of course he was a jock. Jack just sighed when he saw his face drop, not knowing how to get this boy to be happy.

But if he didn’t want to be happy or to be friends with Jack. He wasn’t going to bother.

“Just make sure you show up to class and if you go out for a team, you’re automatically in Coach’s good books. Don’t be late, or you’ll be running laps all period. Don’t forget to change at the beginning of class or else you’ll be wearing the girl’s gym outfits.” Jack just listed out, voice void of emotion. He was a nice guy usually, not a typical jock as people would say, but he believe in the whole ‘treat other’s how you wish to be treated’ rule.

“You can just stay here the whole period, I’m going to do some suicides.” Jack mumbled, he stood up and stretched, cracking his back in the process. He didn’t bother looking back at Alex, he just ran over to where Rian and Zack were and started doing some suicides.

Alex sighed, Jack’s attitude towards him changing in a moment. He probably realized who he was talking too; a nobody.

Everyone was sweating and panting by the time they all finished changing, some people showering, other’s not having pushed themselves enough to need a shower. Jack had been on of the first to finish change, not bothering to shower since he didn’t sweat that much, so he excited the change rooms, wanting to get to class and get it over with.

“Jack?” Jack turned around to see Alex standing there. Alex had his arms wrapped around himself eye’s focusing on Jack’s chin instead of his eyes. Jack raised an eyebrow at the boy, confused as to why he was talking to him now.

“I’m sorry for earlier.” Alex mumbled out, hand in front of his mouth, biting on his nails. Jack just nodded, a small smile on his face.

“No problem.” Jack said, any hard feelings gone already. Before Jack could get another word in Alex was already gone, Jack’s smile making his stomach fill with butterflies. It scared him.

“Barakat! Leggo!” Jack looked at Grieco, who was standing with Matt waiting for Jack to walk with them to Math class. Jack jogged up to them, winking at Matt who blushed lightly again. He was so hot for Grieco. Everyone but Grieco seemed to know.

“The new kid nice?” Grieco asked as they sat down in their respective seats, Jack nodded his head lightly.

“Yeah, shy, but he seems nice.” Jack said, not wanting to talk about how rude Alex actually was to him and give him a bad reputation. Jack was sure he would probably be as shy too on the first day.

“Think he’s gonna go for some sports?” Matt asked. Jack shook his head.

“He’s got the height for some things, but not the mass at all.” Jack said thoughtfully. Matt and Grieco nodded, the excitement of possibly having a new team mate gone. He wasn’t into sports, so Jack’s friends weren’t interested. Jack rolled his eyes at that, realizing that he didn’t have any friends that didn’t play sports. It was like he wasn’t allowed to.

“Everyone get a pencil out. Pop quiz time.” A collective groan of annoyance filled the class room, each student obviously not ready for the quiz. Jack sighed, all thoughts of the new kid and sports immediately gone from his mind.

The rest of the day went by as usual. Jack had a practise after school he completely forgot about, that made him nervous. After practise he got home as quickly as he could, knowing his dad would be waiting for him. He pulled into the driveway, the lights in the house turned on. He sighed but reluctantly got out of the car. He hiked his sports bag over his shoulder and walked up to the door. He didn’t even have it closed before his dad was in front of him.

“Where the fuck have you been?” Jack breathed out through his nose heavily, he turned to look at his father, who was holding a beer bottle in his hand, eyes bloodshot and reeking of beer.

“Practise.” Jack mumbled, his father just looked at him, eyes lidded. Jack rolled his eyes and brushed past his father.

“Fuck!” He yelled. He looked up at his father, who’s face was set into a glare. He felt his shoulder where the beer bottle had hit him, hard enough to shatter against him. Blood seeped through the material of his shirt. He hissed as his finger accidentally brushed the cut.

“Clean this shit up, faggot.” His father mumbled. He glared at his son once more before moving back into the living room. Jack took a deep breath before he did what his father said, grabbing a broom and dustpan from the kitchen. He grabbed some food after, making sure to take some extra bottles of water knowing he wouldn’t be leaving his room for the rest of the night.

When he walked into his room he locked the door behind him, remembering the nights he would wake up to a punch in the stomach when he didn’t. He placed the food down on his desk, throwing his bag into the corner of his room. He slowly walked till he was standing in front of his mirror, where he just stood there looking at himself.

Slowly he lifted his shirt up and over his head, wincing at the burning pain that shot through his shoulder. He kept his eyes closed for a second, knowing that once he opened them he would see the work his father has done. He took three deep breaths, then opened his eyes, sighing at his body.

Bruises, new and old, littered his torso. They ranged from bright yellow to deep purple, the cut on his shoulder already turning a shade of purple, the dried blood around it making it look worse then it probably was. He sighed, the anger towards his father increasing strongly. He didn’t deserve this, he knew that.

But he didn’t know how to stop it.

Jack turned away from the mirror, his reflection making him sick. He didn’t deserve this. He didn’t. He wasn’t one of those people who thought they did deserve to get beat by their own parent. He didn’t think he did something wrong to deserve this. He knew he didn’t. He knew he shouldn’t be scared to come home everyday. He knew he shouldn’t hate his father like he did. But he did hate him. He was scared, and that over everything else, made him mad.

Grabbing a change of clothes he entered his bathroom, hoping a shower could wash all his problems away.
