Jack looked lovingly at Ianto. He had to keep it together for his lovers’ sake. He couldn’t let this guy win. He knew Tosh had had nothing to do with it, but whoever it was at UNIT had better watch out. He was shaken out of his thoughts by a moan coming from Ianto. He started to get up, but realised this crazy guy still had his gun pointing at Ianto.
“Paul, is it? Let me take a look at Ianto, let me make him comfortable.”
“He’s fine as he is. If you want him to live then start talking. I’m not a patient man when it comes to getting information. Mr Jones will not get hurt anymore if you just tell the truth.”
Jack looked again at Ianto, don’t worry my love this will all be over very soon. He thought.
“Ok, ok, I’ll tell you what I know, but you have to believe me I don’t know everything.”
“Oh, I think you do Jack, my source tells me you have all the information I need.”
Jack knew that no matter what he said and how much this guy promised Ianto would live, he couldn’t risk leaving any witnesses. Ianto would be the first one to die. If that was true then Jack knew he would have to leave Cardiff. Maybe Earth forever. He would get the Doctor to take him somewhere where there wouldn’t be any bad memories.
“Ok, you win. This is what I know. Torchwood One were experimenting on a sphere that had somehow arrived on Earth. People claimed to have seen ghosts and had even begun interacting with them. All I know of the sphere is that it should never have been experimented on. The Cybermen were behind the ghosts and they had appeared on Earth from a Parallel Universe.”
“So what you’re saying is that it’s Torchwood One’s fault that the Cybermen appeared?”
“NO....no. I’m not saying that, because they were there at the same time. A void opened and the Cybermen came through. There was the void ship or sphere, whatever you want to call it and that brought the Daleks through when it was opened fully.”
Hold on, you’re saying that not only did Torchwood One know about the Cybermen they also brought the Daleks back?”
“Just listen will you! Torchwood One did not, I repeat did not know about the Cybermen. They were taking people and turning them into their own kind. Then when the Daleks appeared they declared war on one another. Now I don’t know what you want me to tell you about your sister, but this is all I know. I don’t have a list of people who worked there. All I know is what I’m telling you.”
“How did it end? Why couldn’t anyone save my beautiful sister? It’s all your fault.”
“Wait just a minute, can’t you get it into your head, I WASN’T THERE!”
“But you’re a part of Torchwood, you know what happened.”
“How many times. I only know what the Doctor told me and what I have in this box here.”
“Then call the Doctor and get him here, maybe he’ll tell me and so save lover boy for you. Because just at present....Jack....I don’t really believe you.”
“It’s not that simple, I can’t just call the Doctor, he’s travelling and I never know when he’ll be back. I know a little bit more, let me finish then maybe you’ll have your answers.”
Jack looked across at Ianto willing him to be all right. Hold on my love, it’ll all be over soon. As if Ianto could hear Jack’s thoughts he groaned.
“Jack, need water, please help me.”
“Let me get Ianto some water, please, and then I’ll tell you more. It won’t hurt, it’ll just take me a minute or so.”
“Ok but remember I have the gun.” Paul stood over Ianto, stroking his head with the tip of the gun.
Jack had an opportunity to get word to the others, he’d have to be quick he didn’t want this Paul person to come through to the kitchen and hear him.
“Owen, Tosh, Gwen, can any of you hear me?”
“Yes Jack, we’re here. Owen’s outside the door and Tosh and I are back at the Hub. What do you want us to do?”
“Just keep listening. I’ll let you know, but I can’t do anything yet, he has a gun pointed at Ianto.”
“Why Jack, what does he want?”
“He wants to know everything about Torchwood One. Look I’ve gotta go he’s on his way through.”
“Jack”
“What is it Tosh?”
“I’m sorry.”
“Yeah I know, and Tosh, it’s not your fault, we’ll talk when I get back.”
“Hey what’re you doing in there? How long does it take to get a glass of water?”
“Sorry, couldn’t find a glass, got one, just on my way through.”
Jack went through and sat on the sofa next to Ianto. “Here my love, drink this slowly.” He held Ianto’s head and put the glass up to his lips. Ianto sipped the water. Taking the glass away Jack bent to kiss him, he whispered “not long now, it’ll soon be over.”
Paul pushed Jack out of the way. “Oh very sweet, Captain Harkness, now let’s finish what we started shall we?”
“Ok, ok.” Jack touched Ianto’s cheek tenderly and sat on the floor near to him. “What else do you want to know?”
“My sister, what happened to her. What did these Cybermen things do to her?”
“If she was taken by them they would have tried to upgrade her.”
“What do you mean upgrade?”
"The Cybermen took humans and converted them into some sort of zombies. I keep telling you, I wasn’t there, this is all I know.”
“What about my sister.”
“Well maybe your sister got lucky and didn’t get fully converted. They were destroyed when the breach was opened and both the Cybermen and the Daleks were sucked back through. I lost one of my best friends in that breach, so believe me I know how you feel.”
“Oh right, you know what it’s like to watch the person you love slowly die, do you?”
“Yes, I do. I’ve had to witness several people I love disappear from my life. And believe me when I say I am NOT going to lose Ianto, do you understand?”
“Oh I understand, but you don’t have a say in this anymore. I’m holding the gun remember?”
Paul pointed the gun at Ianto’s head, but before he could pull the trigger Jack jumped up, screamed “Now Owen” and flew at the crazy man as Owen came crashing through the door.
Jack was able to get a punch in to Paul’s jaw as Owen drew the stun gun and fired. With Paul unconscious, Jack went over to the sofa, picked up Ianto and calmly carried him out to the SUV. Owen managed to drag Paul to a standing position and manhandled him down to the waiting vehicle. Jack made Ianto comfortable in the back then as Owen put Paul in the front seat he handcuffed him.
“What now Jack?”
“We go back to the Hub, you fix Ianto’s cuts and make sure he’s gonna be ok. Then I’m gonna put this scumbag in the interrogation room and get some answers of my own.
