Right he’s top priority, let’s get him to hospital and down into theatre, if we don’t he’s gonna lose his leg. And for someone as young as him, it’s not going to happen on my watch.”
Doctor Owen Harper had been requested at the RTA on the M4 near to Junction 33. The car was spotted being driven erratically as it left the Travelodge and witnesses had said that when it entered the motorway it was weaving across all the lanes.
Further witness statements had said they saw it being deliberately driven at the central reservation just before it crashed.
The emergency services had been called and the air ambulance had arrived shortly afterwards with Owen on board. He’d taken one look at the injured man and prayed that they’d get him back to Cardiff Royal Infirmary on time. Owen didn’t pray very often, but there was something about this dark haired man that said he needed help.
Six Hours Earlier
Ianto turned the key in the lock of their apartment, smiling to himself thinking how lucky he was that Lisa had agreed to move in with him. That had been six months ago, and he was thinking how his life had changed for the better. He’d landed his dream job at St Cyres Comprehensive School teaching Drama. Lisa loved him and she’d just been promoted at her nursery school.
As he entered the hallway he sensed something was not quite right. Friday’s were his early finish day and Lisa wouldn’t be home until 4.30pm. So why was her coat and bag in the hallway? He dropped his bag and rushed through to the lounge, Lisa was sat on their sofa crying.
“Hey, sweetheart, what’s wrong?” Ianto went to put a protective arm around his girlfriend.
“No Ianto don’t.” She moved away from him, putting as much distance between them as the sofa would allow.
“Lisa you’re scaring me, what’s happened? You’ve not lost your job have you?”
“Ianto you can be so thick sometimes. Why can’t you see what’s going on under your nose.”
That hurt him “hey, what the Hell do you mean?”
“I mean, us Ianto, me and you.”
“What about us?” I love you and you love me....don’t you?”
She looked at him and slowly shook her head “I’m....I’m so sorry Ianto, but....no....not anymore.”
“What do you mean....not anymore?” Ianto was trying to keep his temper in check. He didn’t lose it very often, but now was one of those times. “What have I done? Look if you tell me then we can sort this out. I don’t want to lose you. Please....Lisa.”
Lisa looked at him, shook her head again and stood up, “I’m sorry Ianto.”
“So you keep saying, but what are you sorry for?”
She went back and sat next to him, “Oh Ianto, it’s not working....us....we’re not working.”
“But I thought that when you moved in, it was forever.”
“I tried, I really did....it’s just....well”
“Come on then, what’s not working? I want an explanation.”
Lisa went to take his hand but he pulled it away. “Ok, when you got that job at St Cyres I was really pleased for you. You’d worked so hard for it and you deserved something going right for you after that horrible time you had with the Principal at the Academy. I knew it would be a challenge for you setting up the Drama Department and making sure all the Schemes of Work were in place. I’d never seen you so happy as when you’d finished writing those schemes. You had accomplished something that you’d always dreamed of. But then....”
“Then what? We’ve established you were pleased for me, but....come on Lisa, what changed?”
“Well you were spending more and more time doing extra twilight lessons for your GCSE group and I never seemed to see you. You even went in on Sundays when you’d entered your school in the Rock Challenge competition. I know it was all new to the school and you had to prove to them they’d employed the right person, but I never saw you, not as much as I’d liked to have done. When you asked me to move in I thought things would change, but all you ever talked about was school, the kids and Scott the dance teacher who helped you with Rock Challenge. I’m convinced there was more than a professional relationship there.”
“Lisa don’t be stupid, I....love....you. Besides Scott’s been in a long term relationship with a guy called Ricky. So don’t even go there.”
“I’m sorry, but you can see how it looked to me. Anyway I was feeling left out and some of us from work decided to have a night out, well several actually and well....I....”
“You what?Met someone else.” Ianto laughed thinking she was going to say no. He was stunned when she nodded her head. “What! How long’s it been going on? Do I know him?”
“About four months and yes you do know him....it’s Adam, from work.”
“What, Adam the reception class teacher?”
“Yeah. Oh Ianto I’m so sorry.”
Ianto had to think carefully about his next question “Do you....do you love him?”
“Yeah, I do and he loves me. And....there’s something else.”
“Oh this just gets better and better. Come on then spit it out. What else could there be? Don’t tell me you’re pregnant?”
From the silence and the look on Lisa’s face he knew the answer to that.
“Shit Lisa, you knew how much I wanted kids.” He was shaking, he couldn’t stay in the apartment tonight, he had to get out.
Lisa went to hold his hand again, but he pulled it from her. “No....don’t do that, I’m going to stay somewhere else tonight and when I get back tomorrow I want you gone. Go to Adam, I hope you’ll all be very happy.” He said with a sarcastic edge. Standing up he left her staring after him as he walked out picking his car keys up on the way.
He drove to the nearest Travelodge and booked himself in for the night. He realised he hadn’t taken anything with him, which was ok as he would be going back home in the morning.
He couldn’t settle and kept pacing up and down, turning over in his mind the events and revelations of the last few hours. He had to get some air. Taking his keys and running to his car, he decided to go for a drive, try to clear his mind.
He knew he shouldn’t really drive, not with tears running down his face. He couldn’t focus properly. He made it to the M4, not really knowing where he was going, just that he had to drive.
He’d tried to concentrate on the traffic and his driving, but he was having problems seeing. He knew that he was being erratic overtaking vehicles, but he had to get away. He was aware that cars were flashing their lights and sounding their horns at him. He didn’t care.
The next moment, everything went black.
