Ianto was overseeing the building of the set for the balcony scene, when he shuddered.  What was it with theatres?  Did they all have to have ghosts - friendly or otherwise?  He turned to see if anyone had run past him, no one, not even one of the actors, rushing to get a coffee before rehearsals.

“Hey Mark, did someone just come running past you?”

“Nope, but then I wasn’t really taking much notice.  I’m struggling to get this balcony fixed so it’s safe for Juliet to stand on.”

“Ok, look, I’m just off to get a coffee, you want one?”

“No, I’m fine, I want to sort this out first.”

Ianto waved an ok and went off to the Green Room to fix his coffee.  If there was one thing other than directing that he was good at, and that was making coffee.  He’d developed the art whilst studying.  He had to have something to keep him awake whilst writing his assignments and no way was he into drugs or drink like some of his fellow students.

He was greeted by Dawn.  “Hi Mr Jones.”

“Look Dawn, can we dispense with the Mr Jones.  It’s what, six months since you began working for me?  It’s about time you called me Ianto.”

“Erm, well, if you’re sure?  I mean I don’t….”

“Look its fine, we’re all adults here and Mr sounds too formal.”

Dawn smiled to herself “Ok Mr….sorry Ianto.  I’ll do that.”  Her stomach was doing somersaults, and she had to turn her back as her face began to turn a warm shade of red and she didn’t want Ianto to see the effects he had on her.  Maybe one day she thought.
“Would you like a coffee?  I’m just going to put some of the proper stuff on.  I found a little shop on the Plass that grinds its own and they have wonderful flavours.  I’ve got vanilla or Irish cream here.  Which one shall we have?”

“Oh the vanilla sounds nice, thank you.”

Ianto measured the coffee and switched the machine on.  Whilst they were waiting they went through the notes he’d made from the initial rehearsals in London.  He wanted things to be perfect for his home town.

Chatting to Dawn he felt that cold air again and he saw Dawn physically shudder.  “You ok?”

“Yeah, I think, it just got a bit chilly in here, did you feel it too?”

“Yup, I felt it on the stage earlier when I was with Mark.  What do you think it is?”

“Not sure, maybe it’s a friendly ghost!”

“Yeah, thanks for that Dawn, you know how to cheer a man up.  Look, the coffee’s ready, let’s grab a cup and take it to the auditorium, we can finish those notes up there.”

They grabbed their mugs of steaming coffee and went back to see how the stage crew were progressing.

“Jack….hey Jack!”

“What’s up Tosh?”

“I’ve got a fix on that rift energy from earlier.  It’s definitely the Donald Gordon Theatre that’s the centre of things.  Do you want me to contact Owen and Gwen, they’ve just gone out for food.”

“Yeah, tell them to meet me there, you stay and monitor things and if anything changes let us know.”  He went and hugged Tosh, he was glad that things were moving on for her and Owen, she deserved some happiness, but then again so did Owen.  He’d been lost after Katie died.  Jack was just glad he’d found Owen when he did, he didn’t like to think what would’ve happened if he hadn’t.
He made his way to the theatre thinking about the last time he’d stepped foot in one.  It must have been several years ago now.  He’d just met Estelle Cole.  As he remembered she’d been beautiful and intelligent.  He was brought back to the present by Owens dulcet tones in his ear.

“Hey Jack where are you?  Gwen and I are waiting outside the theatre for you.  Hurry up we’ve got cream cakes and if we don’t eat them soon they’ll go off.”

“Is that all you can think about Owen….food?  Oh, no sorry, it’s Tosh as well isn’t it?” Jack said with a laugh.

“You’re only jealous Jack as you’re not getting any.”

“Oi, boys enough of your sex lives….or lack of in Jack’s case, this girls too sweet and innocent to hear that kind of talk.”

They all laughed.

“Tosh any more information for us?”

“Just that it’s in the main auditorium at present.  But it’s been moving around quite a lot, I’ll keep you informed.”

“Thanks, we’ll start there.”

The three of them entered the auditorium but were stopped by the security guard.  Jack explained they were special ops and had been chasing a suspect who’d ducked into the theatre.  The guard let them through, but warned them there was a rehearsal going on and to try not to disturb the actors.  Jack promised and moved through to the auditorium.

“Tosh anything new?” he whispered.

“No Jack, the signal has disappeared again.”

“Ok, thanks I’m sending Owen and Gwen back to you, I’m going to hang around for a while, in case our friend comes back.”

“Ok, be careful”

“I always am.  Right kids get yourselves back to the Hub, Tosh has lost the signal again.  I’m gonna wait here for a while and watch the rehearsal.  Shakespeare, now that was some guy.”

“Oh please Jack, not him as well?”

“What?  No Gwen, I was meaning he was a good guy, did really well for himself.  Met him once, did I tell you?”

“Erm no, but I’m sure you’re going to when you get back to the Hub.”

Jack grinned and raised his eyebrow.  He loved telling them stories.

“What’s this play then Mr clever boots?”

“Owen, it’s a classic tale of love and betrayal, happiness and sadness.”

“I didn’t want a synopsis, all I wanted was the title and would I enjoy it?”

“Owen you’d love it.  It’s Romeo and Juliet.  I’ll get us all tickets it could be a works night out, we’ll even invite Rhys.”

“Erm, no, Jack.  Rhys hates the theatre.  You know him, if he has to sit and watch anything remotely theatrical he’d be asleep and I don’t think they’d appreciate snoring in the middle of the play.  But I’m up for it.”

“Great, Owen what about you and Tosh?”

“We’ll give it a try.  Never seen a Shakespeare play, might be interesting.”

“Ok, look you two get back.  If I need you I’ll shout.”

They both nodded in agreement and left Jack to quietly sit and watch the rehearsals.
