[FST][Saiyuki]Leaving Dystopia - a Homura FST
Underneath the LJ cut are massive spoilers through episode 50 of Kazyua Minekura's Gensomaden Saiyuki.
(For those of you who do not follow fst, the theme this month is "Characters who have died in canon.")
Dystopia: a society characterized by human misery, as squalor, oppression, disease, and overcrowding. Antonym - utopia.
Heretic: anyone who does not conform to an established attitude, doctrine, or principle.
Homura is the Prince of War, and the primary antagonist in the second season of Gensomaden Saiyuki. When we first meet him in episode 27, he is arrogant, powerful, charismatic, and manages to make a crazy plan sound perfectly logical. For those who clicked this for free music and don't know - Homura wishes to destroy the world and create a new one. This obviously poses A Problem for Our Four Heroes (Genjo Sanzo, Son Goku, Sha Gojyo, Cho Hakkai). Homura and his compatriots Shien and Zenon will cause problems and headaches for not only the Sanzo Party in the next 24 episodes, but also the Kougaiji Party (the Sanzo Party's usual rivals).
And, of course, Homura has a tragic backstory. It wouldn't be Saiyuki if every major character didn't have some sort of tragic backstory. (For the record, even though I'm not discussing them much here, Shien and Zenon have tragic backstories too.)
While it is an anime-only arc, Minekura herself had a hand in designing Homura's character as well as his primary subordinates, Shien and Zenon. She has also done a small manga chapter as well as several official art pieces, even though they never appear in the manga storyline.
NOTE: Not every song's lyrics mesh with Homura's character 100% of the time. I'm sure this is the case with many FSTs, but I felt the need to mention it here.

Homura is the son of the Jade Emperor's sister (a goddess) and a human man. The union of gods and humans are taboo as the union of youkai and humans. It is not surprising that Homura is born with a golden eye, the sign of a heretic, and the Jade Emperor locks Homura away in prison for the crime of his birth.

Without warning, Homura is brought before the Jade Emperor and told that he has been freed. Then the Emperor said something that Homura has not forgotten: "How long do you wish to live?"
Before now, Homura was an empty shell and wanted death. Now, set free, he doesn't know what to do with himself and is lost.
...but not for long.

On the fateful day that Homura is released from prison, a goddess accidentally runs into him. Her name is Rinrei, and she becomes the center of his universe. The affection is mutual, and it is through knowing her that Homura starts to feel different emotions and actually value his life.

Suddenly the world seems such a perfect place
Suddenly it moves with such a perfect grace
Suddenly my life doesn't seem such a waste
It all revolves around you
And there's no mountain too high no river too wide

Our young couple is deeply in love, but there is always the worry of separation due to the mortality that Homura inherited from his father. He promises Rinrei that they'll be together forever, and vows to never bring pain to “the one he loves.”

Heaven finally catches wind of Homura and Rinrei's relationship, and both are taken in to custody. For the crime of a goddess and heretic falling in love, both have different sorts of punishments. Rinrei is to be incarnated as a human, and live a short life. Homura is to become the successor of Nataku, the former prince of war.

The perpetual cycle of abuse towards the war princes continues through Homura, and soon his hands are stained with blood from doing Heaven's dirty work. But he refuses to do this forever, and in time, will get his revenge.

In Saiyuki, one of the large themes is how a person should follow their own path. However, Homura challenges this idea by trying to destroy the world to create a new one. He is doing what he's doing because he believes in it, and knows that this is something he is willing to die for.

A song for Homura and Goku's relationship. Though Sanzo is arguably the main character of the series, it's Goku who has the rivalry with Homura, which breaks the stereotype of main character vs. main antagonist nicely.

“You must grow stronger, Son Goku.” Homura plans to use Seiten Taisei to fuel his world building, but Goku needs to, well, level up get stronger first. Homura uses a series of fights with himself and some of his minions to accomplish just that.

Homura, Shien and Zenon are willing to do horrible things to get what they want. This includes the mass genocide that would happen if their plan to create a new world is successful. They are a little crazy, as all villains who wish to destory the world are, but for almost the whole series act perfectly sane. This makes them that much more dangerous.

Somewhere inside, Homura knows that his plan isn't going to work, and that he's probably doing it for all the wrong reasons. Shien confirms his fears when he dies, and says: "It was a beautiful dream... while it lasted."

For 500 plus years, Heaven has treated Homura horribly, and now he seeks his revenge. As a heretic, Homura is already considered the lowest of all creatures, and it ironically gives him the power to use less-than-noble methods to secure what he wishes. Also, he's fucking creepy in episode 50 when he completely loses it.

When Homura opens the doors to his New World, it looks much like the field of flowers that he and Rinrei used to spend time in. He wishes to create a world where a love as pure as theirs was would never be shunned.

The Sanzo Party cannot let Homura succeed in his plan, and it is Goku who fights Homura. By this time, he knows that he is dying of old age (though you'd never guess it by his appearance), and decides to die like a warrior. This song is also a good summary of his feelings towards Heaven.
17. BLOOD - ~I Remember You~ (Piano Version)

To say that Goku is upset that Homura tricked him into delivering a fatal blow would be an understatement. But Homura tells him not to grieve, and that this is what he wanted. He praises Goku for being the only person worthy of defeating a war god, and requests that his grave be the ruins of his perfect world, rather than go back to the world that shunned him his whole life.

Homura, I don't think any Saiyuki fan expected you to survive your own arc since it was anime-only and Minekura has no qualms with killing off characters, but thank you for the awesomeness you brought to the series. Thank you for not being like the Dreaded Filler Arcs of other anime series.

The Sanzo Party cannot let Homura succeed in his plan, and it is Goku who fights Homura. By this time, he knows that he is dying of old age (though you'd never guess it by his appearance), and decides to die like a warrior. This song is also a good summary of his feelings towards Heaven.
17. BLOOD - ~I Remember You~ (Piano Version)

To say that Goku is upset that Homura tricked him into delivering a fatal blow would be an understatement. But Homura tells him not to grieve, and that this is what he wanted. He praises Goku for being the only person worthy of defeating a war god, and requests that his grave be the ruins of his perfect world, rather than go back to the world that shunned him his whole life.

Homura, I don't think any Saiyuki fan expected you to survive your own arc since it was anime-only and Minekura has no qualms with killing off characters, but thank you for the awesomeness you brought to the series. Thank you for not being like the Dreaded Filler Arcs of other anime series.
You were awesome and I'm glad you got to die on your own terms. Rest in Peace.
