While I agree with some of the sentiments, I find Penn Jillette's atheism to be like his use of profanity, or his show with Teller: a whole lot of flash that's really entertaining to watch, but one must always remember that PJ is a showman, and is never NOT on stage performing, even when the lights are dimmed and the official show is over.
Ah, but he doesn't say he's an atheist. He has gone past that. It's like the difference between "like", "don't like", and "dislike". Like = favors. Don't like = neutral. Dislike = aversion. Yet when people say, "I don't like that", we presume aversion, when in fact it is merely no positive attraction.
I read his "God" to infer "God with a big G", or the "God Almighty" as propagated by monotheism. He doesn't say he does not believe in a creator or a creative force. He says he rejects the antagonist yet somehow loving old man in the sky who can't decide whether to pet or smite his sheep.
The lack of angst over whether some random act he commits settles his eternal yet ambiguous ass in flames or clover, based on the pecadillos of some cloistered child molester infusing his own spin on dogma, allows him to focus on The Ride we are on, and not waste time standing in line for the exit to the parking lot, which christianity falsely advertises as the E Ticket ride.
