For as long as I can remember I have enjoyed awards shows. Not for the awards themselves but for the political statements that are usually involved.
The first awards show I can remember clearly is 1992. My favorite series then was Murphy Brown. The season before this awards show was the year that she became a single mother. It was also the year Dan Quayle criticized her for being a bad role model for becoming a single mother. The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences awarded the show Outstanding Comedy Series, Candice Bergen Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy and the birth episode won for Outstanding Directing.
The Politics on display that night to me, weren't the politics you expect from Awards show these days. Instead it was the first time I saw Hollywood agree with what regular everyday people thought. There's nothing wrong with being a single mother and to be proud if you were.
This time next week the nominees for this years Emmy's will be known. The details will start to come out about the episodes the acting nominees have submitted for review by the peer panels and the popular television columnists will start their predictions on who they think will or who they want to win.
My hope on the other hand is slightly smaller than predicting a winner.
While I never really cared that much for Conan O'Brien, part of me has a great hope. That he gets nominated for Outstanding Variety Music or Comedy Program or Host for the same category. The final piece of the puzzle would be if in September when the awards are handed out that he comes up and wins the thing. Mostly because I want to send a big 'up yours!' to NBC. He might not have any bad feelings towards them but having watched a few of both his and Jay Leno's shows I found Conan easier to watch.
Of course my biggest secret dream is a nomination for Craig Ferguson but I have a feeling that Sid the Cussing White Rabbit isn't exactly the sort of thing that the Academy finds appealing.
Anyway, lets hope I'm not fully disappointed next week. There's not many people I want in the nominations. Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory) and Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) are about the only two I really care about and they're almost guaranteed.
Maybe I should be more concerned about being disappointed on awards night instead.
