Sides For Ben
Lisa nods to a circle of boys. In the center, Ben Braeden opens presents. Cute, spiky hair, chomping into a huge sandwich. Think mini-Dean. He rips open a gift: CDs.
Ben: Yes!! AC/DC rules!!!!
On Dean: Taking Ben in. It’s just eerie.
Dean: How old did you say he…
Lisa: Eight.
Dean’s eyes narrow.
Just then, Donna and Katie (from the teaser) arrive. Donna appears pale and worn. Lisa spots her.
Lisa: Oh, Dean-could you excuse me a minute?
Dean: (still staring at Ben) Sure, don’t mind me.
Lisa leaves Dean to go greet Donna.
Dean stares at Ben a moment longer, then shakes it off, like: “No way-couldn’t be.” His eyes fall on the cake table…
Ext. Lisa’s House-Backyard-Cake Table-Moments Later
Dean loads up a huge plate. Oblivious to the chorus of three women eyeing him hungrily. (Think the Playground Moms in Little Children.) They gossip quietly, so he won’t hear…
Mom #1: Did you hear Lisa call him Dean?
Mom #2: Dean? Like-the Dean? “Best night of my life” Dean?
Annette (early 40’s, in a yellow realtor jacket-very Bree from Desperate Housewives) leans in to Mom #2 interested.
Annette: So who is he?
Mom #2: She never told you the story? Oh my God-so they had this crazy semi-illegal-
Dean turns around-Mom #2 instantly shuts up. Dean finds himself face to face with five staring women.
Dean: Hi.
Mom #1: Hi.
Mom #2: Hi.
Annette: Hello.
Dean offers a friendly, puzzled smile at the intensity of these weird suburban women. He decides to walk away. They let out a collective sigh of lust.
Ext. Lisa’s House-Backyard-Continuous
On Dean’s overflowing plate of cake. He forks a huge bite--
--and as he shoves it in, nearly runs into Ben. Who’s also jamming a bite into his mouth. Casually, chewing-
Ben: (“What’s up”) ‘Sup.
Dean swallows the cake hard.
Dean: Not much.
Small awkward pause, as Ben, oblivious to Dean’s discomfort digs into his cake.
Dean: So. It’s your birthday.
Ben: Guilty.
Dean: Cool party.
Ben: Dude, it’s so freakin’ sweet. D’ja see the moonbounce? It’s epic.
Dean: Oh, yeah, those are fun…
Ben: You know who else thinks they’re fun? Chicks! It’s like hot chick city out there.
With that, Ben discards his cake and jets for the moonbounce.
Dean stares after him with a pure look of “Oh my fucking God.” He takes a deep breath, trying not to panic. Moves to toss out his cake-knocks over the trash can.
Off Dean, righting the trash can…
Ext. Lisa’s house- Backyard-Patio-Day
Lisa pours iced tea for Donna. Donna watches, troubled as Katie plays a short distance away.
Lisa: So. How you holding up?
Donna: I’m fine…
Lisa hands her the glass with a searching look.
Lisa: Really?
Donna: (shrugging) You know.
Lisa: Donna, it’s okay to admit you’re not okay. What happened to Richard…it’s just awful.
Donna looks down at her drink. Finally-
Donna: I just…(then) Never mind.
(Pages Skip)
Donna: Thank you so much. Really.
Annette tries to keep the door open-
Annette: Are you sure-you seem-
Donna closes the door on Annette. Then leans against it. Exhausted, she closes her eyes, and-
Katie: (O.C.) I want ice cream!
Donna opens her eyes. Katie’s right there!
Katie: Mommy. Ice cream! Pleeeeeaase…
Off Donna, staring at Katie like she’s an alien…
Ext. Morning Hill Street-Day
Dean checks a scrawled address. Looks up-it’s on the far side of a playground populated by playing kids.
Dean cuts though the playground, past a clump of tough 8-year-olds crowded around a handheld Nintendo DS. Dean spots-
On a bench a short distance away-Ben. Alone, looking glum.
Dean turns away. Mini-Dean makes him nervous.
Dean glances again. Ben sure looks forlorn. Dean sighs. Reluctantly, he approaches Ben.
Dean: Hey Ben.
Ben looks up at Dean.
Ben: Hey. You were at my party.
Dean: Dean.
Ben nods absently. His attention’s on that clump of kids.
Dean: Something wrong?
Ben shrugs. Dean takes in the boy’s obvious misery. Then follows his gaze to the group of boys.
Dean: That your game they’re playing?
Ben meets Dean’s eyes. Reluctantly-
Deb: Ryan Humphrey borrowed it. And now he won’t give it back.
Dean: You want me to-
Ben: (quickly) Don’t go over there. Only bitches send a grown up.
Dean nods-good point.
Dean: You’re not wrong.
Ben: (resolute and miserable) And I’m not a bitch.
Dean looks to the kid holding the Nintendo. He’s big.
Dean: That Humphrey? The one who needs to lay off the burgers?
Ben smiles in spite of himself. He nods.
Dean sizes Ryan Humphrey up. And breaks into a grin…
Ext. Playground- Moments Later
Ben, nervous but determined, walks up the group of tough Kids. He clears his throat. They ignore him.
Ben glances back over his shoulder-at Dean sitting on the bench. Dean gives him a thumbs up of support.
Ben: Ryan.
Ryan looks up. Gives Ben a disdainful look.
Ben: I’d like my game back, please.
Ryan: (a challenge) Fine, take it back.
Ooh, them’s fighting words. The group of tough kids gather around Ben and Ryan, hoping to see some action.
Ben glances at all the bigger kids. He turns to go…
Ryan: See? Told you guys he was a pu-
--And Ben spins around and knees Ryan in the crotch. Cutting him right off. Ryan doubles over, and Ben swiftly sweeps his leg. Bam! Ryan hits the ground, hard.
On Dean. Wildly entertained. And proud of Ben.
The other kids stare in shock, impressed.
Ben calmly leans over Ryan. Plucks the game out of his hands.
Ben walks away, triumphant. Beelines for Dean.
Ben: Dude! That was awesome!
Dean’s beaming. Raises his hand for a high five-
Lisa: (O.C.) Benjamin Isaac Braeden!
Lisa rushes up to Ben and Dean. She’s furious.
Lisa: What’s gotten into you?
Ben: He stole my game-
Lisa: So you kick him?! Since when is that-
Lisa cuts herself off. Stares bullets into Dean. Realizing exactly why Ben behaved this way. Dean fixes her with an innocent look. She doesn’t buy it.
Lisa: Did you tell my son to beat up that kid?
Dean: Course not. Just a simple leg sweep.
Lisa: Unbelievable.
Dean: What? Someone had to teach him how to knee a bully in the nads.
Lisa stares at Dean. She’s furious.
Lisa: Who asked you to teach him anything?
Dean: Relax. I wasn’t-
Lisa: (cutting him off) What are you even still doing here? We had one weekend a million years ago. You don’t know me. You have no business with my son. Just-
Dean: Lisa-
Lisa: --Leave us alone.
Lisa grabs Ben’s hand and brusquely leads him away. When-
Ben breaks away from his mother’s grasp. Runs back to Dean-
Lisa: Ben!
--And throws his arms around Dean in a quick hug.
Ben: (quietly) Thanks.
Ben runs back to Lisa. She leads him off the playground without another word.
Ext. Construction House-Night
The “For Sale” house Dean passed on the way in to Morning Hill. The exterior’s finished; the inside, gutted and shadowy. The yard is dug up, exposing red clay dirt.
The Impala pulls up. Sam and Dean emerge, holding duffel bags and flashlights.
They survey the abandoned house. Sam looks down at the dirt.
Sam: Red clay. That’s what was on the windows.
Dean nods. Then-
Dean: Take the front. I’ll go around.
Sam nods, they split up.
Int. Lisa’s House-Living Room-Night
Lisa sits down with her book, when-
Ben: (O.C.) Mommy?
Lisa startles, spins around-Ben’s right behind her!
Lisa: Jesus, Ben-
Ben: Play with me.
Lisa: Come on. This isn’t funny anymore. I’ve put you to bed three times.
Ben: But I don’t want to go to bed.
Ben throws his arms around Lisa. Clinging to her.
Ben: I want to be with you, mommy.
Lisa’s a bit taken aback.
Lisa: That’s sweet, hon…
Lisa hugs Ben back…But then-Ben breaks away from Lisa.
Ben: I’m hungry.
Lisa stares at Ben. Something’s off about him…
Int. Lisa’s House-Kitchen-Night
Ben stands behind Lisa as she roots through the freezer.
Lisa: Pizza Pockets okay? All we got’s “deluxe.”
Ben: Okay.
Lisa gives Ben a quick, hard glance.
Lisa: That’s funny. I thought we were anti olives this month.
Ben shrugs. Just stands there, staring at Lisa.
Lisa’s growing more weirded by the minute. She crosses to the microwave, pops in the snack, shuts the door-and gasps!
On the reflective glass microwave door. Ben’s reflection. It’s monstrous-white skin, round suckhole, gills.
On Lisa. She spins to face Ben-
He looks totally normal.
Ben: What’s wrong Mommy?
Off Lisa…
Int. Construction House-Basement Stairs-Night
Flashlight Beam cuts the darkness. Dean scans the stairs, the landing below. Empty. But then he hears-
A faint scratching sound. Coming from below.
Dean quickly and silently descends…
Sam: Get these kids out of here- now-
Dean works fast, hoisting the second and third kids out…
Dean: So that’s why changelings keep the kids alive-so mom can snack on ‘em.
Sam: Looks like-changeling kids feed on human moms, changeling mom feeds on the real kids.
Sam hurries over to help-trying to rouse the real Annette as Dean lifts fourth kid up (just Katie and Ben left now).
Just then-Katie shrieks. Sam and Dean turn-
Changeling Annette is standing right behind them!
Int. Lisa’s House-Living Room-Night
Lisa backs away from (changeling) Ben, who stands there innocently, confused by his mom’s behavior.
Lisa: (panicked whisper) You’re not my son.
Ben: Yes I am.
Lisa: Where’s Ben?!
Ben: I’m Ben. I love you, mommy…
Lisa takes another step back…her eyes fall on the table beside the door. The ceramic bowl holding car keys, opens the front door-and freezes.
Lisa’s POV. Five changeling kids stand on her front lawn. Staring. Freaky as hell. In unison, they step towards her.
Lisa slams the door, terrified.
Ben: They don’t want you to leave me, Mommy.
