That episode is actually exactly why I think this movement is so destructive. I think it's excellent to have films like Belle (despite some unfortunate historical inaccuracies to make the story more fairy-tale-esque), showing these parts of history that were forgotten or suppressed. I think choices like Sanditon or Little Dorrit, where there's a solid textual reason to cast a character as not white are helpful and intelligent (though Sanditon is a poorly written mess that serves Georgiana very poorly, while Little Dorrit is fantastic, and Tattycoram is a great character). Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell is another example of something addressing these people - though like Sanditon, it doesn't serve Steven Black nearly as well as it ought (or the book does

The problem with getting people to see the problem with the lie is the idea that truth is a social construct with no absolutes. If enough people say it, then it must, surely, be true? I've never actually made someone reason this through in relation to "No parking" signs, but it would be fun to do?
An excellent point - though I think these days, people mouth the surface of "everything is relative" while actually being violently morally absolutist...but without a solid foundation.
Thank you! You've absolutely nailed both the lies that underlie these articles, and the whole current casting trends etc etc. Most frustrating. [Particularly the "white is bad" if you consider black writers like Mildred D Taylor

Btw, I did enjoy the Emma article, and it made me realise that's the one Jane Austen novel I haven't re-read since teenage. I shall have to correct this, as soon as I have finished Andrew Murray's "Teach us to pray" which my pastor has just pointed me to, and "Book Girl" which FreeNarnian has just sent me :) Gi' us a week a' twa.... ;)
Thanks! I know there are people who argue against changing character race, or representation, who come from a place of tribalism, and I don't want to be that way - but I am also really frustrated with the destruction of the tribalism that is preaching "white is bad" and creating its evil opposite.
So many thumbs up on "true truth" - I have a hankering to share Schaeffer with my youngest siblings, though they haven't read enough Lewis I think to be quite at that philosophical/theological stage yet.
The interviews for Little Women have pushed the "Jo is queer" angle pretty hard, though that wasn't present in the film itself.
Emma is my favorite Jane Austen novel, because like the author of that article, I identify pretty strongly with Emma herself.
I also feel the stacking of books to read at the end of the year, though mine are much less exciting than yours :).
