While I know the basics of Islam, I don't really know that much about the current gender issues.

I think some of it's cultural, as the religion was started in a society that believed in a patriarchy, much like it was in Judiasm and Christianity, and some of it (may or may not be) what Allah actually intended.

I do believe that system of polygamy is gender discrimination. If it was able to work both ways, it wouldn't be. But, It's possible I'm wrong.

just my thoughts...

I think a lot of predominantly muslim countries often implement things into their laws that do try to put down women...such as women not being able to drive in Saudi Arabia...I don't agree with that law at all. Also a lot of things that go on that people should be more aware of such as honor killings, female circumcision, and forced marriages that are often associated with Islam due to the occurence of such things by muslims and in muslim countries...I think these people need to learn more about their own religion and not mix culture in with it. As for pologyny, I did have issues with it at first...like how come men can marry up to 4 and women cannot? and why can men marry people of the book and women cannot? but ultimately I have to realize that Allah's wisdom and knowledge far surpasses mine...and put away my ego and pride. If a woman were to marry more than one husband, then who is to say who the father of the children are? I guess nowadays you can perform some genetic tests to find out, but that would cause a lot of problems ( ... )

You also forgot that the men are allowed to be with their females slaves as well - I kind of have issues with this as well, but being it was never stated as forbidden but rather as disliked means it will most likely become an issue in the far future.... many of the khalifah's were sons of female slaves and their masters (I just find this really difficult to swallow and why can't they just marry them???)

Allah knows us best and being we are raised in a certain society we have certain views....

We really have to look at our instincts and needs from an unbiased point of view to really begin to understand....

yeah, I have not really looked into female slaves cuz luckily there are none around today...so I can't really say what I think of it. hmm, do you know if slaves back then were allowed to be married? but you are right...growing up in America, we tend to have certain views about what is deemed fair, so it is harder for us to reconciliate our Western views with Islam sometimes.

Yea true I agree with that - we are supposed to take care of all the kiddos and have a itty bitty space - what's up with that? a few Eid's ago were crazy and some woman actually sat on my head for a min because we were soooo crowded and we had to actually pray outside in freezing weather!
