Your son is right..owning a cable modem has become a necessity rather than a luxury. It would be pretty much the same price as owning a regular 56k..just the difference is a cable modem allows you to browse websites at a much higher speed along with everything else on the computer. Most websites today require a cable modem to even enter them, or else they don't load, or if they do load..the speed is too slow to even function correctly thus making the internet pointless. A lot of educational websites needed for school work require a cable modem as well because they have so much information on them.
So in the end a cable modem is worth the few extra dollars because it has so much more to offer than 56ks.
These days owning a cable modem is like in the 90's owning a color tv. 99 percent of the population has a cable modem. It is needed to use such things as, online video games, and other necesities such as the world wide web. Christopher is right. Cable modems are a necesity.
