At 6 he was already bullied. They pulled off his pants and stole his box of Pocky. All he could do was cry under that old oak tree.
Life was already harsh on him, that he thought.
“Here. You can take mine. I’d have enough for today.” She threw him a pink box of sweets.
“It’s strawberry, though. I don’t know if you like strawberry.”
Life was maybe nicer, he thought.
“I like strawberry. I like you.”
“Good. You’re gonna be on my team. I can make good use of a kid like you. “
He was easily tricked by that box of strawberry coated sticks, but what did a 6-year old know? He’d like to be on her team, whatever that was.

10-years old and kids were reckless and wild.
He sped through the crowd on his skateboard, caring less of who he hits or what he hits until he stumbled over the pavement and fell into a puddle of mud instead.
It hurt so bad he was about to cry but when he saw her just staring down at his dirty, chubby face, he could only blink.
She then began to sprinkle water on him…to clean him, to make fun of him, who knows.
But before she could spray some more, he grabbed that green hose and attacked.
Their laughter filled the whole street.

It was always at his convenience having their houses just a block apart.
When his mom would lock him out for coming home late, she would be expecting him throwing stones at her window to let him sleep on her extra futon for the another night again.
“I owe you big time, Jhen.” Then he would pull the blanket over his body. “Thanks”
“Don’t act like you didn’t hear me say I was charging you for every night you spend here Ryosuke.”
But he would answer her with loud snores.
She could only sigh.
