I interpreted the effect of Ride slightly differently, as if there were perceived lag time between actions and thoughts... which might have been much closer together than the person under the influence realized. Perhaps even the same as always, but the perception is altered.
It's an effect that I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like one bit, too!

Yea, it's always difficult to distinguish between what's happening and your perception of what's happening, in introspective stories (or in real life :P)
But I couldn't work out a good way to get an MRI into the story :P

Dammit! Before your postscript I was about to comment that this is actually something science is beginning to theorize. I wanted to be so smart bringing that up!
I will bring up, though, that this was the theme of The Matrix Reloaded, although I'm not sure having put that much thought into that movie makes me all that smart.

And yea, I grew up on the tradition of scifi/specfic that always points to the science it's playing with at the end of the story :P It's like a debt of gratitude, or even a "based off of the work of [this bit of reality]" :P
