I heard some south african author on talk radio today. They were commenting on the elections in south africa where the black government officials were re-elected and how nice it is that south africa has had 10 years away from apartheid. They said how hopeful everyone was for a race-less society to fully develop there

Bleh. I am not big on the "lack of misery" = "happiness" idea. It probably makes you appreciate small things more, and to not think things are quite so bad at any given time, but I don't think that's happiness.

It's like that old notion that "it's better to be cynical, because then, when the worst happens, you aren't dissapointed." I don't really believe that either, even though I'm probably about as cynical as they come.
