Chapter 1

Summary: Reid repays Hotch the favor
**

"In most of mankind gratitude is merely
a secret hope of further favors"
- Francois De LaRochefoucauld

January 29th, 2010
BAU bullpen, Friday at 3 pm

Something was going on. Reid knew it, as did Morgan and Prentiss. When Section Chief Strauss made her fourth trip to Hotch´s office since early morning, Prentiss let out a quiet sigh and Morgan threw his pen on his desk and shook his head as he leaned back in his chair.

Reid just observed; he had a better view inside Hotch´s office through the small window on Hotch´s office due to his location in the bullpen. He saw Strauss speaking in a rapid manner and Hotch nodding his agreement. Hotch said something that Strauss didn´t like, as her face became cold and she nodded before exiting quickly.

“What do you think is going on?” Reid asked his co-workers without taking his eyes off the window.

“It probably has something to do with the FBI-agent IA caught the other day. They say he murdered at least twelve people,” Morgan said, “They want Hotch´s insight on him. Like the guy doesn´t spend enough time here as it is, now he´s going to have to spend the weekend working.”

Reid turned his focus to the computer in front of him, an idea forming in his head. Now all he had to do was bully his boss into agreeing with it. Yeah, that would be easy.

January 31st, 2010
Hotch´s apartment, Sunday at 1:32 pm

Hotch tried to focus on the file he was currently reading; he really needed to have the preliminary report ready by tomorrow morning. With a sigh, he realized he didn´t remember a single thing he had read and flipped back to the first page. This was turning out to be a very unproductive weekend, as Jessie had gone to New York to help her friend with a wedding, leaving Jack with him.

The boy seemed to have heard his thoughts as he quietly stood in the doorway to Hotch´s bedroom, where Hotch had set up a small office in one corner. Hotch sighed. It wasn´t fair to Jack either. Jack clung to him every moment and it only bought a moment peace to play with him, read to him or let him watch the television. He couldn´t deny that he did understand Jack´s need for attention, especially from him, but right now he had to work.

Pushing the chair away from the desk, Hotch turned to Jack and held his arms out. The boy came running and snuggled against him as Hotch pulled him into his lap. “What´s wrong, buddy?”

“I don´t like Thomas the Tank Engine,” Jack stated, although Hotch knew it one of his favorites for the moment.

“Would you like to watch something else?”

“No, can you play?” Jack fiddled with a button on Hotch´s poloshirt.

“I´m sorry, Jack, but I can´t. I have to work.” Hotch pulled the child closer and planted a soft kiss on top of the blond hair. “I love you, Jack.”

“I love you too, daddy,” the child said and struggled to get away.

There was a knock on the front door and Hotch looked at Jack with surprise. “Who could that be?”

“I don´t know,” Jack said and looked up at his dad. Hotch pushed the small panic that settled over him out of his mind as he stood up.

“Wait here,” he told his son as he walked to the front door and took a look through the peep-hole on the door. Reid.

He unlocked the door and waved the young man inside. “Reid, come on in.” After a short silence between them, as Reid wasn´t offering any explanation to his being here, he found himself asking: “What can I do for you?”

Jack chose that moment to come from the bedroom; to his credit he just stuck his head out to see if the coast was clear before running to his father. “Jack, say hi to Dr. Reid,” Hotch told him fondly.

“Hello, Dr. Reid,” Jack said and looked up at the young man.

Hotch watched as Reid carefully went down on one knee and gave his son a shy smile. “Hi, Jack. You can call me Spencer. Do you remember me? I work with… Ummm… Hotch.”

Jack looked at him closely before nodding slightly. Spencer´s smile grew genuine and Hotch found him wondering why Reid was here in the first place and why on earth he didn´t smile like that more often.

“What´s that?” Reid asked and reached out to pull on Jack´s ear. Jack´s eyes grew in awe when Reid retracted his hand and showed him what he had. Jack picked up the quarter from Reid´s fingers. Hotch held back a chuckle over the simple magic trick. “Wait, I see something else,” Reid said and reached with both his hands to work on Jack´s other ear and Hotch laughed silently as Jack eagerly turned the ear toward Reid.

“A dollar!” Jack shouted and grabbed the bill when Reid presented it.

“Hmm,” Reid said thoughtfully, “Do you think it´s enough for an ice cream?”

“Daddy, is it enough for an ice cream?” Jack asked hopefully and held up the quarter and the bill for him to see.

“I don´t know,” Hotch replied and sent Reid a hard stare, “Reid, what are you doing?”

Reid rose to his feet and bit the inside of his lower lip, a tick Hotch knew all too well now. “We all noticed how Chief Strauss was acting on Friday and that you´d be working all weekend.”

That told Hotch nothing at all. “And you are here because…”

“I knew Jessie would be out of town this weekend,” the young man said quietly.

“How did you know that?” Hotch asked startled.

Reid stared at the floor. “I overheard you and Dave talking in the kitchen last week,” he informed Hotch without looking up.

Hotch fitted the pieces together and knew were this was heading. “And you decided to…”

There was silence and Reid looked at anything but him. “Five year olds are much easier than two month olds.”

Hotch smiled, his shoulders shaking with laughter as he watched the nervous man in front of him. Reid had come to help him out. Usually he would have thrown him out with a kick on the backside, but Hotch thought about the pile on his desk he needed to review and looked at his son, whose eyes were filled with hope for icecream.

“I think that´s just enough for an icecream,” Hotch said to Jack.

Reid´s head shot up with surprise, “Does that mean I can take him?” he asked carefully.

Hotch nodded with a smile and looked back at Jack, “You have to do as Re… Spencer tells you and hold his hand when you cross the street, okay?”

“Yes, daddy,” the boy said and ran to get his coat.

“Uhhmmm… I was thinking that I could take him to the park at the end of the street afterward,” Reid mumbled. “But only if you say it´s alright,” he added quickly when Hotch didn´t reply.

Hotch gazed out the kitchen window behind Reid. It really was a beautiful day; the sun was shining and a pale layer of snow covered the ground. He wished he could take Jack to the park. “Yeah, that´s fine,” he told the young man.

Hotch watched as Reid slowly walked down the hallway with his hands in the pockets of his winterjacket and his son running a little bit ahead. He wondered how Reid would be around his son, but Jack seemed fine going with him. Of course a promise of icecream helped with that matter. After closing the door, he quickly returned to his bedroom to get as much work done as possible.

A little over an hour later, Hotch let them inside the apartment, their cheeks glowing red from the cold and their spirits high. Jack was barely out of his coat when he started pulling on Reid´s arm. “Come on, I want you to tell me about the dinosaurs.”

“Hold on, Jack, let him take his coat off,” Hotch said with a smile and set a hand on his son´s shoulder. He watched as Reid became self-conscious as he pulled the strap of his bag over his head and removed his jacket.

“Do you want some coffee to warm up?” Hotch asked and headed for the kitchen.

“Yeah, that would be good,” Reid said.

“I thought you were going to show me the dinosaurs?” Jack said with a pout.

“Jack, be polite,” Hotch said firmly.

Reid looked down at the boy and grabbed his messengerbag. Pulling out three large picture books, he handed them to Jack. “You start looking at these and I´ll read them to you after I´ve had some coffee. Uhhmmm… I need to warm up so I can read.”

Jack took the books to the couch and opened the first one. Hotch put five spoons of sugar in one cup and held it out to Reid, who took it with a grateful look and wrapped his fingers around it for warmth.

“Thank you,” Hotch said quietly, “I owe you one.”

“Actually no, I´m repaying you a favor,” Reid said and carefully sipped his coffee.

“Since when?” Hotch asked with a frown.

“Since you helped me with Henry.”

Hotch laughed, “Reid, that was over a year ago.”

“Threehundredseventytwo days… Ummm… Yeah, little over a year ago,” Reid said shyly and sipped his coffee.

Hotch watched him for a minute. He hadn´t noticed how thin Reid was. He knew the team sometimes teased him about it and Reid usually just ignored them. But now he saw how really thin the man was. His long fingers wrapped around the mug, the small pout on his lips when he sipped his coffee, the strong features of his face. The wild hair he didn´t seem to be able to control, his nervous tick of constantly pushing it off of his face and tucking it behind his ear. He didn´t realize he´d been staring until Reid fidgeted and did just that and Hotch looked into his almost empty coffeemug.

“I… aaaammm… should get back to Jack,” Reid stammered and put his coffee away.

Hotch nodded and watched him leave as he wondered about the mystery of Dr. Reid. When he heard Reid and Jack go into Jack´s room, he went back to his paperwork, only to be interrupted by the occasional laugh that carried from his son´s room.

Two hours later he closed the last file, stretched his arms over his head and let out a long yawn. He had gotten more done in the past three hours then all of yesterday. All that was left was to type up his notes and he could do that later on after Jack had gone to bed.

Standing up, he went to investigate what Jack and Reid were up to. He found them on the floor in Jack´s room, mirroring each other, sitting on one foot and leaning their chests against the other knee. Both were moving around green soldiers, Jack with accompanying sounds and Reid talking about entering Gold Beach.

Jack turned his head when he heard the door open. “Dad,” he shouted with excitement, “we are playing D-day.”

With a soft laugh, he sat on the floor next to Jack and gave Reid a glance. Reid answered his smile by looking away and giving his attention to the scattered soldiers. “It´s not nearly as accurate as I would like… But I did the best I could with what I had.”

That made Hotch laugh and he brushed his hand over Jack´s hair, “You guys hungry? I think it´s time for supper.”

“I want pasta,” Jack announced and crawled into Hotch´s lap.

“Say, please, Jack,” Hotch instructed softly.

“Can I please have some pasta?” Jack repeated.

“Yes, you may.” Hotch turned his attention to the other man in the room, “Reid?”

“Yeah. Yeah, I could eat.”

Hotch put a small kiss on Jack´s temple, “Why don´t you put the solders away while I fix us something.”

“I´ll help you,” Reid said when he noticed Jack was about to argue.

Standing up, Hotch watched as the two of them quickly started to sweep the soldiers into a big pile, and then hurried to the kitchen to start the Mac 'n' Chesse and some grilled cheese sandwiches. He really hoped that Reid wouldn´t mind the simple dinner.

Jack came running from his room as Hotch set the food and beverages on the table.

“Did you wash your hands, buddy?”

“Yes,” Jack replied and took his seat at the table. Reid trailed behind and seemed unsure what to do with himself until Hotch told him to take a seat.

“Sorry, it isn´t much,” Hotch told him.

“It´s okay, I´ve had worse.” Reid set a grilled cheese sandwich on his plate.

Hotch laughed because he knew Reid wasn´t offending him, only stating the obvious.

Dinner was entertaining. Jack chatted more happy than he´d been for what seemed like days. Hotch asked him questions about his day and Reid quietly corrected him when the facts became rather unbelievable.

Reid got ready to leave after dinner. “Thank you, Reid,” Hotch said sincerely when Reid hung his messengerbag over his shoulder. Jack came running and wrapped his arms around Reid´s legs, looking up with hope in his face. “Will you come back and play?”

With astonishment, Reid looked at the child before looking at Hotch. “I don´t know,” he replied, carefully unlocked the child´s arms from around his leg.

“Please,” Jack begged.

“Uhmmm…” Reid stumbled with words, “Sure.”

Hotch smiled at the awkward smile Reid gave his son, “Looks like you´ve made a friend,” he told both of them. Reid looked at him with a raised eyebrow. Hotch used the opportunity to reach for the door and give Reid´s shoulder a pat as he smiled at him. “Thank you again, Reid. For everything.”

Reid gave him a half a smile, “Any time.” He lifted his hand and gave a short wave, “Umm… I´ll see you tomorrow.”

“Bye, Spencer,” Jack called as Reid walked out the door.

“Bye, Jack.”

Hotch closed the door behind him and looked at his son, “So what do you want to do?”

“Can we play with my dinosaurs? Spencer showed me how the T-Rex hunts the Speedy Thief.”

Hotch followed his son into the room and wondered how long he would be hearing about Spencer Reid.
