The sharp pain ripped through her body. She bit back the cry of agony. This wasn´t supposed to happen, he wasn´t meant to find them. The safe house was supposed to be that… safe. A haven from the King they were to testify against in three days. But apparently he´d sent his goons after them, had somehow managed to find them, even if they´d been so careful. She looked down at the red coloring her nightgown and pooling between her legs on the bathroom floor. “Oh, god,” she whispered and set her hand on her swollen belly.
The small whisper caught the attention of the young man crouching next to her, peeking through the open door. He snapped his head around and his eyes widened in horror. “Emily!!” he said quietly and his worry evident in his voice. “When did the bleeding start?”
“I think, when we moved in here,” Emily replied and grabbed the man´s arm, right below the inner elbow, in a fears grip. “Spence, I´m having contractions too,” she stared at the father of her baby with fear. The pregnancy had been a surprise to both of them but also news filled with joy until the complications started at 20 weeks. She´d gone into preterm labor but the doctors had managed to stop it and had put her on complete bed rest. After an attempt on Spencer´s life, the BAU had realized the King was sending his flock after the witnesses and they were at the top of the list. The stress had caused another preterm labor and small placenta abruption at 26 weeks. It was too risky to keep her in a hospital where security was low at best and they´d agreed on Spencer and Emily going into hiding with Hotch being the go between the hidden once and the doctor. The doctor hadn´t agreed until he´d been told of Reid´s intelligence and had made sure Spencer understood the risk.
“The placenta abrupt,” he stated and gripped her arm in return. He picked up his phone as he peeked through the ajar door to see if the hit-man was anywhere near. “Hotch, we´re going to need an ambulance, the stress abrupt the placenta and she´s in labor. They need to bring blood, A negative.”
“Garcia is calling right now, we are five minutes out. Hang in there,” the unit chief told him through the phone.
Another contraction hit and Emily pierced her eyes shut in pain and muffled as well as she could the sound of pain.
“Damn it, Hotch, she doesn´t have five minutes,” Reid argued to the phone and looked at the amount of blood flowing from the other body. He needed to get to the extra blood kept in the fridge for case just like this one, but between them and the fridge were at least one, probable two armed men.
“Emily, I have to go get the blood,” he told her and started peeling her fingers off his arm.
“No, Reid, it´s too risky,” she quickly said in a low voice, “Hotch will make it, they´ll make it.”
Reid relented, looking at her with fear and helplessness. “Em, please.” He begged just as a contraction had her doubling over and the pool of blood increased.
“No,” she said fiercely between breaths, clutching his arms in pain, “You have to save him.”
“Em…” Spencer whispered desperately.
“Promise me, Spencer.” She looked at him with order in her eyes until she squeezed them shut and suddenly the floor flooded.
“Hotch, her water just broke,” he quickly said to the phone and wrapped his arms around his trembling lover.
”We are entering now.” Hotch replied calmly and Reid didn´t notice the intensity in his voice.
Spencer held her to his chest, he could feel the tight grip loosen. “No, please Em, you have to stay. They are here, just a little bit longer.”
“Spence, did you know you are the best thing that happened to me,” she whispered quietly.
“And you are my world you know that.”
Gunshots echoed through the house. “I love you.”
“Em, I love you to, please stay with me, I can´t do this alone,” Reid cried as her hand fell from his arm.
“Reid!!” Hotch called out and two seconds later the bathroom door was pushed open. “I need EMT´s in here now!!!!!!”

Hotch nodded to Anderson before entering the private room at the NICU. He wasn´t supposed to be in there but he didn´t take protocols all that heavily when a friend was in need. Reid was sitting exactly where he´d left him an hour ago, on the small bench next to the small incubator, staring at the small glass box without seeing it. Putting his hand on the agents shoulder, he startled Spencer who turned his head and looked at him with broken eyes. Silently, Hotch crouched in front of him without taking his hand of the young man´s shoulder.
A single tear ran down Spencer´s face. “How?” The young man whispered.
“How, what?” Hotch asked quietly.
“How did you go on?” Reid asked, now clearly staring at the tiny infant inside the glass cradle.
A sharp pain tightened his chest as he remembered who he´d lost and Hotch had to look away to gain control of his emotions. He looked at the incubator. “You do it for him. You do it for your son,” Hotch said quietly.
Suddenly Reid stood up and walked away before turning swiftly around. Hotch kept his gaze on him, seeing that he was upset… grieving.
“Why?” Reid shouted, “Why should I love him, when everyone I love is either taken away from me or leaves me behind. WHY?!”
“Spencer,” Hotch said quietly and rose.
“They are all gone, Hotch…” Tears fell freely from the young man´s eyes as focused on him. “She´s… gone,” Reid chocked and Hotch took the few steps that separated them and set his arms around the broken man. He didn´t expect Spencer to set all his weight on him and they crumbled to the floor.
“I know, I know, I´m sorry,” he whispered as Spencer cried into his suit-jacket. That´s how the team found them ten minutes later. Garcia immediately walked into the room and kneeled on the floor behind Spencer, her hands wrapped around them both.
“Oh, Spencer,” she said as tears started flowing from her red-rimmed-eyes. Slowly JJ entered the room, with fresh tears in her eyes and stopping behind Hotch, she took Spencer´s hand in hers. Soon Morgan came in and set his hand on Reid´s shoulder only to have Rossi follow suit with the other shoulder.
Hotch looked at the small circle around them, showing his approval with a small nod, he hugged the fragile man closer. A child´s cry broke the silent in the room. As one they all turned toward the sound and Spencer seamed to wake up from his stance. Standing up he moved toward the box and opened it. Picking up the baby, he wrapped the blanket closer around the small body in his arms and sniffled. The child instantly quieted and stared at the strange man.
The group moved closer, JJ half smiling through her tears as she looked at the baby. “Had you decided on a name?” Garcia asked and got a look from Hotch.
“Philip, after Em´s dad.” Spencer said without taking his eyes of the bundle. “Philip Marcel.”
“It´s beautiful,” JJ said and ran her finger over the child´s cheek.
Spencer looked at her before looking at all of them, and smiled a small sad smile. Garcia raced her hand and wiped away a stray tear from Spencer´s cheek with her thumb before pushing a lock of hair behind the young man´s ear. Reid sighed and set his gaze back to the baby.
Hotch took a deep breath and let it out slowly. With the help of his family and time, Spencer would be okay.
