Torchwood: Children of Earth; Day One

Jun 13, 2009 22:04

So I went to the TW: CoE; Day One screening last night. I had originally planned to write a very spoilery play by play, but instead I've decided to write a more broad and less spoilery general review. I honestly think people will be missing out a lot of things by knowing too much about the episode (and that's coming from one of the biggest spoiler ( Read more... )

Haha well exactly. But I seriously think for all the things I did know about this episode I feel glad for not knowing the ones I didn't.

Just a bit, yeah ;)

My one question is how the characters react to Owen and Tosh's deaths. How is it addressed?

It's barely addressed at all. They're not mentioned by name that I recall. The only thing you get is a shot when Gwen walks into the Hub in the morning and over to a computer station where she has a picture of them pinned to it which she says 'hi' to. It's quite lovely.

I was actually surprised by how little I missed them. I had expected it to feel strange without them but the pacing of the episode was done so well that you're learning so much about new and old characters that you don't have time to think about them.

I loved both Tosh and Owen and I'm sad they're gone but there didn't really feel like a gap without them.

That makes me sad! :( But... I guess I might understand once I watch the ep. Do you know when it's supposed to air?

I really expected to miss them more than I did. The episode was too full of brilliant stuff for it to be an issue though.

BBC America are airing it the week of 20th July. UK date isn't confirmed, it's likely to be the same though there's a rumour of the week of 6th.

Before that we've got the 3 new radio plays to come on 1st, 2nd and 3rd July.

You're quite welcome! I know other people have written things that are more a play by play, but I decided against that. I don't want to ruin it.

I'm afraid I read the detailed play-by-play someone posted last night! Major willpower fail on my part. But on the other hand, it turns out a lot of the spoilers I'd been aware of for a while/scenes I'd seen pictures from filming of turn up in episode 1, so I think I'm pretty much unspoiled for the other 4 episodes (and will try to keep it that way!) That's something, haha!

I'm so excited that it sounds like Torchwood is finally reaching its potential, if that makes sense. :) I absolutely love series 1 & 2, don't get me wrong, but it sometimes felt like it could've been more than it was? :/ Like I could forgive any flaws in terms of plot etc because I love the characters so much, but it sounds like *everything* is coming together now. Eeeeeee. ♥ (And lol, please excuse the waffling. And more lol, edited because I should really re-read before I post. ;))

Hehe, I can't blame you, I'm sure I'd have done the same thing were I not there myself. So glad I didn't learn about certain things though. SO SO glad.

I definitely think it is. There was always so much the show could achieve, and as much as I love it (and it'd be no surprise to anyone that I do) I don't think it ever quite got to where it could be.

It has now achieved what it should have a long time ago.

I saw this! and basically agree with all of your thoughts. Which three scenes stand out as the ones where the room fell silent? I do remember this happening (and even remember them addressing it in the Q&A), but my memory is bad enough that only the day after I've forgotten half of what even happened in the show (which will at least be nice for me when it gets shown, maybe I'll get some surprises all over again). Vague spoilers for anybody else reading this comment: The one I do remember is that scene with Ianto and his sister. Well-deserved silence indeed.

Wasn't it just wonderful! I honestly don't think it could have been better. My expectations were so high but they were all met and then some.

I'd say the scene with Ianto and Rhiannon, the one with Jack and Alice and the one with Gwen and Clem. All utterly amazing scenes and some quite brilliant casting there.

Aww, at least the wait is only 5 weeks at most. After such a long wait so far, that's hardly anything!

It's well worth it! ;)
