Served no real purpose? Oh, but it did!

For the rest of the movie, I was sitting there, slack-jawed and terrified, wondering who else was going to die. After all, if he could kill Wash - Wash! - everyone else was pretty fair game.

As a way of showing that all bets were off, it worked spectacularly.

I still wish it hadn't happened, but it was definitely not without reason.

Hmm, I suppose see what you mean, though after speaking to others it's reffered to as "Whedonism".. if you check most of his stuff he always kills off 2 or more major characters... so I think we got away lucky with just Wash.

On the slight plus side, they could always do more material based before the movie, since it happens at a non-descript time. Post Movie is a little less interesting anyway, what with River now on the mend, Simon and Kaylee together, the Alliance breaking up and the entire Wash - Zoe - Mal conflict removed.

I'll never look at rubber Dinosaurs the same again...
