I don't have one myself, but my brother-in-law has a Nexus and was raving about it last time I saw him, if that's any remote help at all? He works in IT and knows a hell of a lot more about these things than I do, but was convinced that it was far better than an iPad and half the price.

Can't give you any more detail than that, though :)

That's great advice. The Nexus seems very appealing on features and cost. :)

The Nexus 7 is exactly what you've described in your post. I've had mine for 2 months and love the actual shit out of it. Can't recommend it enough.

Ugh. I wish she hadn't gone and bought a cheap no-name tablet for herself this weekend WITHOUT EVEN ASKING what is this. I totally would have gone with the Nexus 7.

I have nothing useful to add but I love that you basically think of your mom as an overgrown 2-year-old when it comes to responsible use of an electronic device.

Yes, that is pretty much how I think of her.

I love the Kindle Fire (built-into-Amazon thing be damned :P), but I hate typing on it almost as much as I hate typing anything on my much-smaller phone. So, I wouldn't want to get it for someone using it for a lot of email.

This is great to know. Functionality is really important and she types for crap, so this would be a huge issue. :)

I'll do some deeper research into the refurbished products. I didn't see any in my price range on a quick look at the site last night but I didn't look very hard. Of course they're probably constantly updating their inventory and the cheap ones may get snapped up quickly.

I would love to give her one as long as it didn't cost $400-500. Off to look! :D

I looked into refurbs and iPads are about the same price as new. But if you buy them through apple you still get a year of Apple care and the option to purchase the 3year one, which i recommend. I had it with my first macbook that i got on ebay and they ended up having to give me a brand new computer because of some weird hard drive issue. For typing an iPad is SOOOOOO nice. I love them. We have a couple android versions at work, since we do apps and such for newspapers, and none of the others are as nice as an iPad, IMO.

Whew...LOL!

I actually am really really really wanting the mini. Which is bad. We so don't need to spend the $$ right now. Maybe for my birthday next year. Although if I turn up to have cancer again, Bill's going to buy it for me now. LOL! So again...hoping for a birthday present for next year...
