Character Name: Robert “Bobby” Drake
Series: X-Men comics
Age: 25
From When?: The Black Queen has just started her attack on Utopia.
Inmate/Warden: Warden. Bobby’ll probably treat the whole thing as a joke publicly, but he’ll still try his hardest, you’ll just have to look closely. He wants this chance to prove to everyone that he can do this.
Item: His X-Men communicator, which is basically just a big round button with a red X across the center.
Abilities/Powers:
Therokinesis: This ability allows Bobby to lower his external and internal body temperature, and project intense coldness from his body. Within seconds, Bobby is capable of lowering his body’s temperature from 98.6F to -105.7F within the span of a few tenths of a second. As his temperature falls, the moisture in the air surrounding him is also lowered.
Thermal Vision: Is able to see beings due to the heat signature that they give off, because of the absence of heat around him.
Cryokinesis: Bobby can also freeze the very air moisture around him into super-hard ice. He can use it to form any objects of his choosing, the only limitations are: his own imagination, his skill as a sculptor, and the amount of moisture in the air and the air temperature. He does not have to hold the ice in his hands to shape it. He’s been known to create: Ice-slides, ice-columns, ice-bats, ice-shields, and ice-ladders.
Organic-Ice Form: Bobby can not only cover his body with ice, but he is able to actually become organic ice. In this form, Bobby is basically indestructible. If shattered, he is able to use the moisture in the air to reform. However, the mental effort needed to employ his mutant power can eventually fatigue him and render his freezing ability temporarily dysfunctional.
Hydrokinesis: Bobby is able to function as frozen water that will allow him to travel within large bodies of substance almost instantly. He is also able to convert his body to gigantic proportions through absorption of a lake or pond or even a swimming pool. Basically, wherever there is water, Iceman is a threat. He gains the strength of the size he takes.
Molecular Moisture Inversion and Conversion: Is able to freeze all of someone’s water molecules, and is able to transform people into moisture molecules and transport them over great distances.
Personality:
Often labeled immature, Bobby Drake is usually the one playing comic relief in serious situations. A varsity slacker and a world class flirt, Bobby likes to play things cool. However beneath his class clown act lays a great deal of insecurity. He's constantly frustrated by what he feels is his inability to reach his full potential, and he has a lingering need to feel and act normal despite everything that's abnormal about him, resulting from the years he spent hiding his powers for fear of his father's bigotry. This, along with Bobby's desire for acceptance often leads him to take on certain roles to fit in the way he thinks he ought to. Bobby isn't comfortable being sincere or emotional, so he acts as the loveable jokester and prankster to mask his vulnerability.
Also in spite of his cool demeanor, Bobby can be a bit of a hot head-careless, impatient, and influenced by his own emotional turbulence.
Bobby Drake is like the ice he manipulates -- not cold but transparent. He's devastatingly honest. He is very up-front with his emotions and his thoughts all the time. Also, he's obviously incredibly brave both in terms of facing external, physical danger as well as facing up to unpleasant situations and admitting his own mistakes. This emotional honesty can often complicate matters for Bobby, especially in matters of love. Sometimes Bobby is looked down upon as being immature, but this is just a guise for his insecurities and well noted fear of change, he is easily made emotionally uncomfortable by his own short-comings and this often alters Bobby's child-like joviality into sullen moodiness (which does not help in the perception that he is immature).
Bobby’s going to treat coming to the Barge just like he does everything else in life. Like a huge joke. He’s going to laugh off his responsibilities as a whole, but mentally treat this as his one chance to prove that he can do something other than be a “water boy”. He’ll also be scared that he’s going to screw up in some major way, which might help to make him take at least his inmate seriously.
History:
Bobby was born to William and Madeline Drake in Floral Park, New York. He lived a fairly normal All-American boy life, until one afternoon while on a date with his then girlfriend, Judy Harmon. A local bully tried to take Judy away for himself, and sticking up for his girlfriend, Bobby encases the boy in a block of ice. Later, the townspeople break into the Drake home, the sheriff has no choice but to put Bobby in jail for his own “protection”. Scott soon arrives however, and tried to talk Bobby into coming with him. Bobby and Scott fight, and are broken up by Xavier. Once Xavier can talk with the Drakes, Bobby agrees to leave with him and attend his new school. The two are soon joined by Hank McCoy, Warren Worthington III, and Jean Grey. He even fell in love with another mutant, Lorna Dane. After spending some time with the group, and many mission and battles later, Bobby leaves the X-Men.
Bobby moves to LA where he starts to attend UCLA, and soon becomes a founding member of The Champions of Los Angeles. The team doesn’t last long. Though he’s committed to attending school, he can’t shake his hero days. He ends up being kidnaps, encounters the Hulk, and even aids the Thing, before he finally retires. He returns to NY and continues his schooling for accounting. Bobby is soon dragged back into the game by Hank, and the two encounters Cloud, who Bobby ends up in a relationship with. He then joins the Defenders, alongside Warren and Hank. When the Defenders disband, Bobby starts his own career, as an accountant.
Before joining back up with the original X-Men, Bobby travels back in time, where he’s able to meet his parents before he’s born. Upon returning to the proper time, he and his parents reconcile. The group of friends, no longer under the X-Men name, takes the name X-Factor. It’s with this team that he first encounters both Apocalypse and Loki. Due to Loki’s meddling however, Bobby starts to lose control of his powers. He has to wear a power-dampening belt for a short time. Bobby has slowly started to learn, that he can not only coat himself in ice, but also other things (like the Empire State Building). With more training, Bobby loosing the belt, believing he has achieved his full potential. He stops trying to develop his powers. While with X-Factor, Bobby helps defeat Apocalypse’s Horsemen, and also helps watch over some of the younger mutants. With Hank’s help, Bobby is able to help Boom Boom gain a more normal life. He also helps supervise the New Mutants, and the X-Terminators. Who later turn the tables, and save his life.
Finally back with the X-Men, Bobby joins the Gold Squadron under Storm’s leadership. He once again becomes the team’s practical joker and comic relief. It’s with this new team, that his mind is taken over by Emma Frost. She is able to use his powers at levels and in ways he had never been able to reach before. When he gets his body back, he falls into a deep depression, and starts to reassess his life. Emma believes that Bobby has the potential to be one of the most powerful mutants on Earth. Bobby even confronts Emma, demanding that she show him how she was able to use his powers like she did. In her own way, Emma does help Bobby. However their interactions leave a scar on his mind. Bobby decides to help out his friend Rogue, and the two take off on a road trip across America. Bobby is haunted by images of Emma, he thinks she’s messing with him. However Bobby, puts all that aside, and becomes Rogue’s protector as she battles with her own demons. When Bobby returns back home, he is thrown into a situation, which is completely against whom he is. He’s forced to lead a team, and ends up doing so well.
Bobby is also one of the ones summoned onboard the spaceship Prosh, and is one of the mutants who must “save the human race”. During the trip, Bobby is able to use his abilities like never before, and upon returning home, he is no longer afraid of his own evolution. He even plans to find out what more he’s capable of. A glitch in this comes after he is pierced through the chest by Black Tom. He is unable to return a part of himself back to flesh. He is later found by the school cook, frozen in a black of ice. Revealing to the rest of the school that he had underwent a secondary mutation. While on a mission to help save his friend Kurt, Bobby’s body is shattered from the neck down. He is able to reform his ice form by absorbing water from one of their attackers, however he cannot change back into his human appearance. Bobby becomes bitter, and despondent. It’s during this time, that Bobby and Lorna try another relationship. It doesn’t last.
On M-Day, Bobby awakes to find himself back to flesh and blood, and believes he’s one of the ones who have lost their powers. However while being held at gunpoint by the Leper Queen, Emma Frost “pushes” something in Bobby’s mind that forces him to turn to ice. Bobby finds out that he didn’t lose his powers at all, but had unconsciously repressed them on his own.
When Rogue is asked to pick her own team of X-Men, Bobby is one of the members. During their first mission as a team Bobby discovers he can be completely destroyed but then put himself back together again. Bobby starts a relationship with Mystique. While trying to find a way to defeat the Hecatomb, Bobby is able to contain the explosion, saving many. It’s later revealed that Mystique was simply using the X-Men, and Bobby’s feeling to gain access to the Destiny Diaries for Mr. Sinister. Bobby and Sam Guthrie are able to escape from the attack by the Marauders and Mystique with the help of Emma Frost. While fleeing they are chased by Sunfire, and Bobby learns he’s able to stop Sunfire’s powers at a sub-atomic level. Using Emma, the two attempts to recover the diaries. However the two are attacked again by the Marauders. While in his ice form, Bobby’s arm is severed. Mr. Sinister takes this time to take Sam prisoner, and attempts to telepathically erase his mind. Bobby attacks Sinister, and escapes with Sam.
When the first baby since M-Day is born, Bobby is injured in the fights for the child, and while recovering, he volunteers to go and look for the missing New X-Men. He’s successful, and returns to the mansion, just in time to find the O*N*E* Sentinels guarding the school has been infected by nano-Sentinels and attacked the school. Bobby and X-23 help out in the battle, and with the help of a few of the kids, and the X-Men they are able to survive. The nano-Sentinel however, escapes. Bobby is the one who pilots the X-Men to the North to locate the baby, Cable, and finally fight the Marauders, the Acolyte, and Predator X. He enters the battle just as Predator X falls, and is just in time to see Bishop “kill” Professor Xavier. Scott announces he’s disbanding the X-Men.
During the disbandment, Bobby returns to NY where he meets up with his ex-girlfriend Opal. His powers seem to be acting strangely and he can’t get himself warm. Hank tells him to head to San Francisco, and Bobby and Opal do. While on the plane, a bomb detonates, and Opal reveals herself as Mystique. She shoots him in the chest and tosses him from the plane. Bobby is able to save himself, and turns into a liquid form while landing in a lake. He ends up in a hospital, where Mystique sneaks in and stabs him with what she claims is a “cure”. Bobby survives it by icing up several times, flushing his system of the “cure”. Mystique tails Bobby, and tries once again to kill him. However Bobby is no longer able to be killed by fire or by simple gun shots or fists. He gets distracted, and when he returns his attention to Mystique, she tries to blow him up. However this time, he has someone else to protect. While getting the guy to safety, Mystique gets away. Promising to meet him in San Francisco. Weeks later, she finally shows up. Atop the Golden Gate Bridge, as Iceman. Bobby goes to confront her, and the two talk. A real heart to heart. Mystique promises, that she’ll see him one more time, and that he will love her, before throwing herself off the bridge. Her body isn’t found.
When the invasion of the Skrulls starts, the X-Men are fully settled in California. Bobby teams up with the X-Men, and fights off the invasion. The Skrulls are forced to leave, or face extinction.
When Norman Osborn sent his X-Men to help his Avengers round up the “mutant terrorists”, Bobby came to the rescue of Colossus.
When Osborn’s X-Men came to Utopia to fight, Bobby was the one that defeated Mimic.
Before his arrival on the Barge, Bobby was solely responsible for all the drinkable water on Utopia. He tries to help keep the spirits of all the other mutants up, but he himself believes that they’re living the last days of mutants.
Sample Journal Entry:
Well I guess there are worse places to be. Like oh say, Utopia. Seriously, the X-Men must have some flashing neon sign hanging over us that says: “Come here if you want a fight. Really. Anytime. We’re right here. “ It’s getting to the point where if I slept through one, I’m sure no one’d even notice. So who’s going to notice me skipping out on Scotty whole island paradise thing? Sure they’ll probably run out of water sooner or later, but they’ve got all those geniuses. I’m sure they’ll think of something.
Enough of that though. Name’s Bobby Drake, and I’ll be your new warden today. Haven’t got the name of my inmate yet, but I’m sure I’ll find ya soon enough.
Sample RP:
Bobby didn’t like the way this was going. He really didn’t. Sure he’d seen Jean in a bad mood, Lorna too. But Emma, she was just plan scary. This was why, when she started yelling at a few of the students, his students mind you, he ran for the labs. She would never go in there, so he was perfectly safe. The only problem was, he was starving.
Hank sometimes had food hanging around the lab, but he was off searching the world for something. A curse, to whatever had happened on M-Day. They all knew Hank wouldn’t find it, but the blue teddy bear had hope. No one wanted to break those, especially lately. Bobby found himself searching around the lab, it looked like someone had come in here and cleaned, and he wondered if maybe it had been Scott. The man had so much on his mind, but well, he could still surprise you.
Bobby sat himself down in one of the large chairs, and spun it a few times, his feet coming up to rest on one of the computer desks. The monitor was off, but the computer was still on, so Bobby made sure his feet were away from any of the actual equipment. He leaned his head back and noticed a small picture resting to the side. It was old, and worn, but the people were recognizable.
The large man in the back, was obviously Hank. Before he became the blue fur ball. Scott was obvious too. He was the only one not smiling. Even the professor had a large smile on his face. Bobby brought the picture closer to his face and snorted. He looked so much like a dork. Standing next to Warren, trying to look cooler than him. Never would have happened. Not in the popular sense anyways. But that never bothered him. Warren and him were closer than any of them had been. Bobby had been an only child, and so had Warren. But they fit the brother mold.
Then there was the red head. In the tacky green. Bobby laughed out loud as he looked at her. So innocent, so calm, so happy, so well, Jean. His older sister. She had meant the world to him, and he hated himself for never being there for her. But he had put his own problems ahead of hers. It was something she never cared about, but Bobby hated it. Especially now. He missed her. Missed his family. He set the picture back on the desk and dug out his phone. He pressed the first speed dial button and leaned back. After the voice box finally beeped at him he smiled widely.
“Warren! Out on a date again? Look, I’m bored out of my mind. Come on home, and let’s hit the town. Just us. It’s been way to long. Call me back, bro.”
Special Notes:
