i remember when my dad used to say in a sing-song voice "dont step on a crack, or you'll break your mama's back!". & my mind would race in terror. did he not put the fact together that mom had had four back surgeries? from then on i would hyperventilate if i accidentily stepped on a crack in the ground that my little legs couldnt stretch far enough
