"I've always considered myself to be a good student," Haku admitted readily. He knew Zetsu to be right. To learn from such varied teachers required a lot of patience and understanding. He had spent hours, listening to both what he was told and what hadn't been said, of pouring over scrolls and notes, checking references and similarities among the lessons he had been taught. To his benefit, a great many things overlapped. His acupuncture training had come in handy when he was under the wing of the Hunter-nin, and still had his uses. With Zabuza for a master, Haku certainly got a lot of practice in many of his learnings ( ... )

"It shows." Zetsu agreed, shifting into a more comfortable position and running a hand down the stalk of a nearby cattail that poked out from the water. He nodded again at the comment about experience, fingering a leaf thoughtfully and smiling. "As long as you remember that, you'll likely go far." How many shinobi could actually take that fact to heart? How many thought they could learn all they needed to from lectures, scrolls, books? It was only by putting in the time and experience that you improved yourself. You needed the blood, the sweat, the tears, the scars to prove it--all of which he'd offered up in spades ( ... )

It was amazing, how similar their backgrounds were and how different the outcomes could be. Haku, who had killed just as readily as Zetsu in order to protect himself, could seem so pure and innocent, so unworthy of such bloodstained hands. How strange it would be to consider such things.

Haku seemed unphased by the hand that fell upon his shoulder. He looked up at Zetsu with a gentle and grateful smile. "Strange how it feels so nice to know that there are other people who have experienced similar things..."

Without warning, Haku turned around and hugged Zetsu. To the other shinobi it would probably seem awkward, but to the effeminate Hunter, it seemed like the only proper course of action.

Of course, just how similar they were, Zetsu didn't know. His own actions had been deliberate--at least initially, his hand hadn't been forced, just his patience had eroded. He just.... he couldn't see that for Haku. Something drastic had to have happened to him, not the slowly building trickle and drip of water torture that his own childhood had been. After all, Hyoton-users had been hunted viciously.... They would have probably tried to kill him outright, not just made his life miserable day by day. Who wouldn't have taken action ( ... )

Haku leaned into the embrace, far more comfortable in the arms of Zetsu than he really should be. There was just something right about this, like they were meant to be together. The effeminate shinobi really couldn't place the feeling, but he knew that he liked it.

"What do you think are the odds of two people like us finding each other?" Haku asked, curiosity lacing his voice. It was a good question, and one that deserved a proper answer. After all, for them to have met couldn't have been more than sheer chance. Could it?

Haku was certain that he would love to stay like this forever. There was a sense of serenity that he would give anything to keep right now.

Zetsu just let out a long, slow sigh, enjoying the feeling of weight and warmth against him and just, for once in his life, being able to be a solid support for someone. It was a restful thought, having something to give back, even if it was something so small. He looked out pensively over the water for a moment, curling a lock of hair around one finger as he considered. "The same as the odds that a wildflower will bloom. Nothing is ever as simple or certain as it could be ( ... )
