Room 304, Friday Evening

Jun 19, 2015 21:41

Elsa frowned a little as she sat at her desk, tea growing cold in a cup beside her hand, which was holding a letter from home. She'd been trying to ignore it for months now, the way guilt had been gnawing at her. She could be friends with the Anna here on the island, but her own was back in Arendelle, lonelier than ever? And even now, months later ( Read more... )

Kaylin was mostly working on writing a letter to Caitlin. Why? She had no idea, except that the last time she'd been back Caitlin had given her one of those looks and said, "You know, dear, it would be very nice to get a note from you now and then letting me know what you've been up to."

Kaylin had tried to protest that she could just tell her, but arguing never worked with Caitlin.

Anyway, she was glad of an excuse to stop, so she turned and watched Elsa pack for a few moments before saying anything.

"You going somewhere for the weekend?"

"Home," Elsa confirmed, and then, after a moment's hesitation, she added, "for... perhaps longer than a weekend, actually."

She glanced over at Kaylin from where she was contemplating whether it was worth packing up her prom princess tiara, and offered her a wry smile.

"I'm a little worried about my sister. Not the other version of her that came here. My sister. I think maybe she could use somebody's company for a while. Proper company. Family."

Kaylin just stared at her for a moment while her brain processed that. Elsa was going home. To stay for a while. She was massively jealous for a brief moment, then embarrassed at her own pettiness.

"I think," she said slowly, "that if your sister needs you, it's good that you can be there for her. If..."

She had to stop and swallow for a moment, trying hard not to think about Jade and Steffi. "If I had family, I'd want to make sure I was with them."

Elsa chewed her lip at that, and then nodded faintly. She had Anna. Anna... was all she had left, by way of family, and it hadn't been all that long since their parents had been lost at sea. She might not be able to empathize completely, but she at least had some idea of what Kaylin might have been feeling.

"You'd be welcome to visit any time you wanted," she offered, though she was well aware that it was probably small comfort in the face of being completely alone. "I might even be able to come back before long. I just... I owe this much to Anna. She's been alone for so much of her life now, and most of that has been because of me."

Well there was one boy who had gotten a message. And he was standing in the doorway with a frown.

"Well. Fuck."

Somehow he made that sound lighthearted.

Was... was it kind of terrible that maybe Elsa had been hoping he wouldn't get the message until she was gone? And that they wouldn't have to have this conversation? It was selfish of her, she knew, but this... this was one of the many things that she was completely out of her depth about.

She'd lost so many people in her life, but she'd never, ever, really had the chance to say a proper farewell.

"Language, Barry," she chided, though her heart wasn't completely in it as she turned around to face him. "There are young ears here."

... The dog. She was talking about the dog. Who was asleep. And who was probably well and truly used to it by now.

Barry smirked a little at the chiding. "Sorry," he said stepping in. "I didn't realize Canute could pick up bad language."

He stood there. Feeling awkward. He knew eventually this would happen. He just didn't expect it to happen so soon.

"So I guess you're needed back home?" He said forcing himself to sound like it wasn't a big deal. "Do you know for how long?"

"I..." Elsa paused for a moment, biting her lip. "I don't. Not for sure. Hopefully not for long. I know I'd miss everybody here..."

Would miss him.

"But Anna needs me. Needs... She needs somebody. She's alone, Barry. She's been alone, except for Gerda and Kai, for far, far too long. And I can't keep running from her like this. That's the reason I came here in the first place, you know. To get distance from Anna. And now there's another Anna here, and... and..."

She inhaled. Breathing was important, still, after all.

"What sort of sister does that make me, Barry?"
