Good news: Yesterday I wrote almost 800 words on the Northern Exposure fic I've been working on in various iterations for at least ten years. (Like most, I have a "Joel returns to Cicely" story in me; mine's just taking a while to expurgate itself.) I had the same issue with a mattress and getting a memory foam topper was exactly what I needed. I hope it helps you, too.

Two weeks later...it's about 85%? I can still feel my lower back isn't supported enough, but I don't know how to fix it save tying a rolled up towel to my torso (I start out on my stomach/side and wind up on my back at some point during the night). But it's MUCH better than it was!

A rolled up towel can get bulky. I had a back issue for a few years and found a smallish pillow that fit right into that space and strapped it on. It was more comfortable than a towel and gave the entire small of my back the support it needed.
