Best thing you can do is keep the wound as clean as possible. I had staples once (on my head) and they're really not the best way to keep a wound closed; they'll probably come off within the next 3-5 days if I remember correctly. If there is anything you need, please let me know.
Come out by themselves?? [panicking] I was told to come back after about 10 days to have them removed. I'm being as careful as I can with it and slowwwly bending my leg a bit and straightening it in the hopes it will heal better that way. I *really* really don't want it reopening on me or getting infected.
Staples suck as far as getting the job done. I didn't have to have a single one removed by a doctor.
And yes, you don't want an infection; there is too much methicillin-resistant staph aureus (MRSA) running around out there now and it is NO fun to deal with.
There are different kinds of staples, and I've never had any so I can't speak from personal experience. But sometimes they work better than suture, depending on the injury. You should have got a sheet of discharge instructions, and if you didn't it would be a good idea to call & talk with a nurse. Take care, good luck, and I'm glad it wasn't worse!
