I mentioned in a comment of my last post that I had recently joined MotM, Match of the Millenium (MUCK). And I mentioned that I was going to discuss why I decided to join it and what my thoughts are so far

Well, I think the reason has to do with them not wanting someone to be able to sit around and parse enough data to crack the formulas by being able to see all of the details of both sides of the attacks/reactions. In normal combat you only see non-numeric information at best, so all of the math behind the system is obfuscated just enough to keep you from figuring out the formulas too much.
Granted, someone that wants to power game the combat system so bad that they're willing to sit around and crack the formulas is probably a waste of time player in general, since they're missing the point, but it's not like there aren't people like that anyway. ;)
So I understand the reasoning behind it, though I guess it's just another one of those things where the place seems to take itself *TOO* serious, which is ironic, because a lot of the RP samples I've skimmed through seem to stray more on the fluffy side of things from my perspective.
I do believe someone attacked themselves for like 4 hours or something one time and invoked the ire of the staff.
I always thought, like, with a combat system like this, it would be interesting to create one which evaluated how long the pose was, and maybe you could create a dictionary that assigned certain points to certain words and it would evaluate them that way and add an edge or a disadvantage to you in battle. Maybe even categorize words, and then have a prop which decides which word set suites your character more, a serious character wouldn't be like DUDE! AWESOME!, but a teenager might. Have the player say what they feel their characters archetype is on-app out of a list. This would also give more importance to the 'example pose' on most apps, too.
I think when it comes to a combat 'system', I'd prefer something that isn't subjective. It's already a stretch for some to accept a combat system in the first place, but then to try and explain that some program will be evaluating the 'quality' of their pose would probably be more than most people would be willing to swallow.

Growing pains are natural, I get the impression that the place has never seen this many people on it at once. That suggests to me that either A - People are desperate and willing to go anywhere at this point, or B - The place is good enough to merit that many people being interested in joining up

The page program is that way due to preference. All it needs is a conscious decision/request to change it. If it were your mu*, I agree that it'd be a simple matter to just fix it on the drop of a hat. And if it were mine, I agree, I would too.
But this is honestly the first time I have *even heard* of the page issue since the staff changeover. It was written that way because of personal preferences. I never really agreed with it myself, and now that I know about it, I can certainly see about changing it.
That's how we are with a lot of stuff. I'm sure you're familiar with the problems going from a 2.0 release to a 3.0 release. :P
I guess I'm *not* used to finding out about problems through indirect means like livejournal however. Live and learn, I s'pose.
Thanks for the post. =) I was interested in your perspective on the place, so I'll also be interested in a follow-up on how things work out. ^_-
That hamfisted thing though...yeah. Without being on the place, that's been my barrier to entry when I've considered it before. From my perspective, the logic chain in place worked out like this:
>Rika has been told combat code is optional. >Rika knows and has been told, that this is seldom the realistic case. >Rika wants to circumvent this, by playing a character who doesn't fight. Therefore it would never come up. >Rika sees they do not allow entry-level OCs. >Rika sees they do not allow non-com FCs at all, period. >Rika concludes from this that all players are forced to fight whether they want to or not. >Rika flips the mu* the bird.
Sooo. =P I mean, if your next report is really positive, like I said, I might be willing to inconvenience myself a bit. Otherwise, if the above hasn't changed, my stance probably never will either.
I can't imagine why they don't allow SCs (Social Characters, i.e., non-combat characters) be OCs without the 2-month window. I know you can't take combat OCs without having a FC 2 for 2 months. One of the reasons given for that is that with FCs, your attacks, stats, etc., are already set up. But with an OC, you need to understand the combat system enough to create your own stats/moves/etc. That would be really hard to do if you didn't have 2 months or so of experience with the system under your belt

I'll respond to these points, since you seem to have been misled.
>Rika has been told combat code is optional. It is.
>Rika knows and has been told, that this is seldom the realistic case. Not going to disagree...
>Rika wants to circumvent this, by playing a character who doesn't fight. Therefore it would never come up. >Rika sees they do not allow entry-level OCs. Mistaken. All OCs are entry-level. We just don't allow that to be your first character. Also, you *can* apply for a non-combat OC, social character. It's not made clear, but you can.
>Rika sees they do not allow non-com FCs at all, period. Also mistaken. We have a handful of non-combat FCs, i.e. Yuki and Lilly Kane.
>Rika concludes from this that all players are forced to fight whether they want to or not. Try telling that to our social characters.
Akari, you pretty much summed up my feelings on a lot of things. I don't understand why Hikaru hated aliasing things to multiple names. I'm also probably one of the people who has used the fighting system like 3 times and has been there a year.
On page, this will help you:
Alias p = to p/l. I think there's p/r, too, though I dunno if that even works.
Page is Vic's program, and I actually approached him about, like, helping improve it, but he's like... I programmed it like I wanted it. :O So I didn't bother him about it anymore.
I'm with Davin on that, if you're emulating mush, deal with it. You dug your own gave. Adding to that is as simple as copy + paste, too. Hell, you could easily program an add-alias program to rename the exit for you if you're lazy. If you have to edit the muf, adding in some new matches isn't hard either.
But that's not even the stuff which isn't so complicated. There's stuff like how 'unidle' was changed to '@idle' just because she liked it that way and no other real reason. It would've been less confusing (and fun to be able to stay connected for more than 2 minutes) if 'unidle' also worked, too, but that was too much to ask at the time.

Try telling that to our social characters.

And to demonstrate why Hikaru hates aliasing things to multiple names, I'll show you. This is the exit name for the page command right now.
page;pag;pa;p;page/last;pag/last;pa/last;p/last;page/las;
pag/las;pa/las;p/las;page/la;pag/la;pa/la;p/la;page/l;

page/re;pag/re;pa/re;p/re;page/r;pag/r;pa/r;p/r(#727E)
That's with just two options.
@mail is worse.
