business trip, exotic yet disruptive

As of January 1 I've been managing the 4 guys in our Bangalore group; given the time-zone differences, they mostly support the geographies that the rest of my group supports (everything east of the Rockies), so it made sense.  I've only met them once, though we talk on the phone weekly, so I've been looking for a way to spend some face time with ( Read more... )

D'oh, now it becomes clear. I am sorry to miss you as well--but there's a chance for maybe a dinner on the way home. . .
UVa has a strange idea of "spring recess"--starting in February! You'd think they set their calendar by Chaucer's England, where Valentine's Day was when birds chose their mates.

But indeed what an exciting opportunity! I wish I had suggestions for you, but I am made of ignorance.

Missing you is the most disappointing part of the whole episode. I'll keep my hopes up for another opportunity.

The old agricultural calendar placed spring between Twelfth Night and Easter. We're pretty conservative about some things around here ...

Actually I suspect it's because that week is the halfway point of the semester; nothing more significant than that.

I turn green with envy...

Re: LBC meeting - I'll bring stuff to Jamestown - please to be leting me know your menu, and I'll pull the appropriate items and have them waiting for you when you get there. The bronze cauldron will get a good scrubbing immediately prior, so as to ensure a lack of poisonous copper oxide in the interior.

Given our small numbers at Jamestown this year, it will be hard to build & tend a fire within the safety requirements. There's also a strong likelihood that all or most of the guys will have to be out of camp for the demo, and leaving a fire behind will doubtless result in our being permanently de-invited. So my current plan is for them to have an assortment of "bought in the last town with some of our dwindling coin" foods -- a couple of kinds of pie (probably a meat and a fruit), bread, dried sausage, cheese. Since they're still officially soldiers-on-campaign, they're released from the Lenten abstinence restrictions till they get home, so a little meat & cheese (or eggs) will be OK. But it's still a sparse time of year, and they're strapped for cash, so they'll be buying little fresh stuff (maybe something with kale and/or root vegs) and nothing lavish. Water to drink, as the park forbids alcohol & we can't disguise no-alcohol wine by making a hot pyment ...

What's your take on fair coffins of paste? Edible, or just
