Okay.
So did anyone else run to the movies the opening weekend of Cloverfield in a fit of J.J. Abrams fandom?
Or did you see it at all?
If you did, I need some help with a long running dispute over the ending.

Don't read this if you don't want to know. )

i saw cloverfield when it came out, and i didn't see that "thing" either. maybe you have to pay close attention? i'm not sure. also, supposedly at the end credits there's some garbled words and if you rewind it, they say "help us, it's still alive". creepy!! i think there will be a sequel.

I love making new LJ friends. I've added you as well!
We did stay through credits, and I heard the voice but not what it said. That's crazy!

The viral sites for the movie both support and break that theory. One set says there was an underwater accident at a site, another says there was a comet or meteor.
JJ himself said something about it being a baby from under the sea in an interview.

Check out the very right hand side. It's there. (I got this picture off of the Cloverfield FAQ's on IMDB)
Technically, the splash is part of a satellite falling and that's what 'awakened' the monster. At least... that's what JJ Abrams is saying. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1060277/faq#.2.1.58)
I've been a bit of a dork lately and went looking at all the sites related to Cloverfield. The back story to the movie is quite elaborate and really interesting. Most of the stuff I've found is here: http://cloverfieldclues.blogspot.com/
