Summary: Mitzi wonders if Punchy would ever return his feelings as they stand talking under the City Fountain. Oneshot
Every time she stepped off that bus, she couldn’t help gazing up at the town square in awe. The huge, splendid buildings towered higher than any back at the village, and the hustle and bustle of other town folk around the square was always slightly intimidating. She stood on her tip toes and looked anxiously towards the fountain.
Would he be there today?
Her stomach swooped as she spotted a pair of black, pointy ears, but her face fell in dismay; it was only Kiki, and while she loved that sweet little black cat, it wasn’t him.
She went to speak to her anyway, as she thought it would be impolite not to say hello. But all through the conversation, she couldn’t help glancing over the other cat’s shoulder, looking out for the distinctive black ears hidden in the sea of animals.
“But I’m still afraid that everyone can tell I’m just a small town girl!” said Kiki, with a little laugh. “Oh, but I must head off to the market now, Mitzi. See you later!”
Kiki waved and disappeared into the crowd, leaving her companion alone and disheartened. She trailed a paw through the clear water of the fountain, the coldness making her fur bristle. Serena gazed down at her dolefully, in all of her white marbled splendour atop the fount. Endless piles of pennies lay under the water, glistening prettily in the water. Sighing, Mitzi withdrew her paw and gently shook it dry. Perhaps she should just go home. She wasn't sophisticated enough to shop at Gracie Grace, and she was too fearful to venture into the dubiousness that was Redd's. There was nothing here for her.
Until she spotted him at the other side of the fountain.
She hurried over, careful not to run and appear too eager.
“Heeyyyy, Mitzi, mrmpht.”
“Punchy! Good morning, mew,” she replied with a smile, her heart fluttering. She self-consciously pawed at her ear, smoothing out an imaginary tuft of fur.
“It’s pretty, this fountain,” he said before sighing. She looked at him curiously. “If only once, I wish I could meet a date out in front of the fountain, mrmpht.”
Her heart ached. How she wanted to share her feeling!
I’d meet you in front of the fountain, Punchy. I’d be your date. Whatever you asked of me, I’d do it...
“It would be like... my own TV romantic comedy. Wait, what? I mean... like a karate-spy action thriller!”
She sighed inwardly. The moment was lost; she was too shy to say anything anyway.
“Exactly like a thriller, mew!” she responded instead, hiding the sadness in her voice.
“Well, let’s go play at the arcade. That’s what friends do together, right?” he chuckled. She could almost touch the obliviousness in his voice.
“You betcha,” she replied almost too cheerfully, before accepting his outstretched paw in hers, wondering if he’d ever return her feelings.
