Man, it was a narrow thing, yesterday. They finally made it across US183. The zombie uprising began in the middle of Pflugerville, and swept through the easily susceptible suburbs before deciding to move into the more challenging terrain of Austin. Higher population density was a big draw, I'm sure ( Read more... )

Avoid the Gulf, as the space is too enclosed, and there are just too many people.

Gather some canned goods and ammo, and head to the Midwest, or the Southwest. Wide open spaces are your friend and mine, and the Blue States are gone.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards the west. My friend fairgoldberry is holed up somewhere just west of town, I think, but I have the feeling that's still too close. A friend has a place outside Big Bend, maybe I can see who has gatehred there. Hopefully none of them have been bitten. Certainly won't be hard to find weapons and ammo here. Rumor is that MacBrides is giving away their inventory to those who strip down and show no sign of infection. Might be worth it, they have good guns.

And you're right about the blue states. I think my friend zahnarabai in Boston was infected. Another Boston friend, furtim, made it out fine but the way was difficult. The picture he painted of the Boston metropolitan area wasn't a pretty one.

How's DC doing?

((I know this is only supposed to be yesterday, but I missed it due to a barbecue, and surely a zombie invasion wouldn't only last a day. :D ))

The population density in the poor neighborhoods spread the plague faster than wildfire. The richer folks stayed at home, and waited for the police, but no one here had any proper weapons to defend themselves from the infected; as they started to starve, they ventured out and tried to escape, only to find the highways blocked and the streets worse than deadly.

I left on my motorcycle after the first few days. I knew I should have invested in a sidecar, as I could really, really use the extra water and ammo now. Food is easy to find; clean water has become the most luxurious good, as the northeast is in the middle of a drought and the municipal water is long since stagnant. I'm fine as long as my iodine supply holds out, but after that, I need to move farther west, perhaps back towards Pittsburgh.

At least Pittsburgh knows exactly how to deal with the Zeds.

We actually holed up in a safe house just east of I-35 and 12th St. We lost one man, but the National Guard pulled us out not long after midnight. Talk about humiliating, having to strip down and submit to a bite check before they'd let us in the personnel carrier! We're in the Greater Austin Area Refugee Center near Temple. It's got what they say is left of the population of Austin, about 50,000. We won't know the full effect till everyone who fled is located, but it's pretty bad. I'm not sure where you were, but a big swath of South Austin down MoPac had to be razed and burned to the ground. It'll play hell with the aquifer ( ... )

I missed the mention of "zombies" in the first sentence. You have no idea just how confused I have been (and for an embarrassingly long period of time).

You should be safe if you come to stay with me. Immigration's a bitch in Canada--the un-dead simply won't have enough points.
