It's not released until next Friday, but thanks to a friend, got to go to a 3D pre-screening of it. Was super excited about it.
Walking way, general feeling.... It's okay. Not great, not bad, it's just a cute, fun movie, but not much else.
The art's kinda got a generic feeling to it, nothing huge that I want to flail or write home about. Think 'Despicable Me' with Zombies.
Music had some amusing bits, mostly forgettable. There was a few songs co-written by Adam Sandler, they're cute fluff, and LMFAO's Sexy and I Know It made an interesting appearance.
I'm gonna tackle characters and writing together, because I think they suffer from the same problem. It's the Zing.
The 'Zing' is one of the biggest plot points in the movie. You meet someone, you feel a zing, and as the closing song lyrics state "You know the Zing is going to lead to a wedding ring."
It's love at first sight, 'twu wuv', soul mates, etc, etc, etc.
And it's basically an excuse not to really do any character development between any of the characters except Dracula. From the beginning you already know that the guy and the girl are gonna end up together, as long as Dad doesn't interfere. So therefore Dad must change to become okay with it.
Which means the entire thing is entirely formulaic.
World travelling guy has a 'zing' with an isolated high-ranking girl who wants to see the world... If this was a Disney movie, there'd be helpful singing birds instead of sass-talking shrunken heads.
That's not to say there aren't some fun scenes. Ones not found in the trailers include the Flying Tabletops, the only puppy to respect her wolfman father, ("Seat 23. He ordered the vegetarian.") and the Dracula tunnel. But in my own honest opinion, the humour really wasn't enough to counter the predictability.
Unlike the recent ParaNorman, or the aforementioned Despicable Me, there just wasn't a lot of depth or soul in the movie. I am glad to see that it did look like the Voice Actors (many whom you will prolly recognise) had a good time.
Also, skip the 3D. Doesn't add or subtract anything to the movie, save a few bucks.
So, fandom predictions.
The pre-teen crowd is gonna eat it with a spoon, sighing over 'The Zing'. There's gonna be a lot of post-movie fics, stories of Jonathan being turned into a Vampire as well, and a lot of bitter-sweet stories about Dracula and his Wife.
:: SPOILERS ::
Personally, I'm hoping for someone to tackle the logistics of travelling with a vampire who has no passport and can't be in sunlight. I'm predicting Mav is gonna spend a lot of time tucked into Jonathan's bag as a bat.
Also would love to see more about the town that's holding the festival, and how or if life changes afterwards.
Or, if someone's gonna play with the 'Zing' trope, what if Dracula hadn't retrieved Jonathan, and the consequences of that. Muwahahaa.
*cough*
So anyway, long story short, kids'll prolly like it, not much for adults, save it for the cheap seats. But, as in all things, your mileage may vary, this is just my two cents.
