well that was not a fun task.
i opened the powder draw on the washing machine to discover the fabric softener section full of water and black gunge. luckily there's a release mechanism to remove the draw, but i still spent half an hour cleaning it all.
how on earth was it left to get into that state??

Had no-one used it for a while? It's possible that the last time it was cycled the fabric softener release thingy didn't release, so it just got stuck there.

the black stuff was all down the channel from the fabric softener compartment and the first bit of it was blocked - it's hard to describe but there was no fabric softener left in it.

it does mean i'll be checking my parent's macine when i go home!

no idea, though Jo only went away a couple of weeks ago (i think) and people were still here during the 1st week or so of July.
