The pro-lifers that think banning/restricting contraception is the way to get what they want are idiots. You can prevent the unwanted pregnancies, or you can allow them to happen. Which will lead to more abortions? Hmmmmmmm You know, if you are a religious zealot who is totally against birth control, I get that. But most of these people aren't ( Read more... )

Right. I'm pro-life, but I'm definitely not anti-contraception. It's always been completely beyond me why the Catholic church is against birth control that prevents pregnancy, not terminates it. It just doesn't make sense...not even Biblically, I don't think.

The other thing that bugs me (not trying to attack you for being pro-life): the idea that you can't be both pro-life and pro-choice. Just because I am for a woman's right to choose does not mean I think abortion is a good thing.

I think you can be. I'm not sure if I'm politicially pro-life, or, if I would let that conviction supercede something else I feel is important...regardless, I don't think outlawing abortion completely is going to solve anything, but I do think late-term and partial birth abortions should be illegal. I think that, to really prevent abortions, you have to get to the root of the problem. Instead of working so hard to outlaw abortion, I think a lot more good can be done by providing support for families, among other things. I wrote a paper my sophomore year about why I was against abortion, and part of the reason is that I think, rather than liberating women, it degrades women. As well as being harmful to our bodies, accepting abortion is accepting that as a pregnant woman/mother, you are inferior and can't perform as adaquetly as a man or a "free" woman, and it also allows men to escape the consequences of their sexual behavior. Feminism is a part of a larger philosophy that values all life, that says that that rights cannot be conferred ( ... )

You're coherant. And having seen what it's like raising a small child (my brother was born when I was eleven) I will say that having a child (especially if you want to raise it well) does put a damper on your freedom big time. That's not to say that that's a bad thing/that you're inferior, but it does limit what you can do. Although... I see your point more when it gets to the fact that adoption would work out better, but a lot of people don't want to go through with the pregnancy ( ... )

I'm Pro-life, and Catholic, and I never understood why the Church is so against birth control...it absolutely doesn't make any sense.

I would think if someone was against abortion, they'd be gung ho on contraception. But I suppose that would make too much sense.
