My little sister and also a friend really liked the Artemis Fowl books, but I could never really get into them... I guess I'm a little picky? Or maybe I really suck at reading XD (which is probably the case.)
Nah, they're not particularly well-written. It's the kind of young-adult book that's just silly fun, and you read it to have a good time. I have a particular bond with Artemis Fowl because my best friends and I learned the Gnommish alphabet (back before they leaked a translation key) and it was sort of our secret code. Also, kid geniuses are sexy. :P
Unlike the Bartimaeus Trilogy, I don't go around recommending Artemis Fowl to my friends, because I understand that there isn't really much in it that they could honestly admire. xD;; I totally understand.
However, if you haven't yet read the seriously underappreciated Bartimaeus Trilogy. . . *shifty eyes*
I do admit, I think the Eternity Code was really where it was best. It's totally my favourite, and it's sort of the spike in Artemis's goodness over the course of the series. After he loses his memory he gets a bit more evil again, and he never really gets to be as nice ever again, which is a bit sad. . . (Unless you count Orion? But Orion is like, everything Artemis isn't xD) And yes, Holly rules! *fistpump!*
I never read that one, though I thought about it a few times. . . did it really? >: What is that book about?

I also read the Supernaturalist, and it felt a little forced...
