It's come to this: pouring out frustration in a lj post for potentially all 5 of my readers to see. I'd like to say my job search has improved since last I updated this blog. Interesting points that you make up about the self-worth of employees in labor intensive jobs. It's as if they give up all personal identity and interest, and are reduced to numbers. Anyhow, that's how I felt when I was working at AMCAD, and couldn't even take a break to work on my novel or Stalemates. (I think on ten minute breaks I wrote scenes for that baseball novel about Mike on the back of receipts in my wallet, which I later transcribed to the notebook.)

Ian, technically you're living a far more productive life right now between substitute teaching for multiple age groups, paid facility services work, volunteering at the Moline library, and volunteering at the Putnam. Let's just say your résumé won't require as much padding as, say, John Doe in suburban Chicago, who says he's been looking on CareerBuilder and Craig's List when pressed about whether he's applied for any jobs.

i hope that you've gotten a job by now. it was really tough for me too when i got back from taiwan. i even got rejected from washing dishes at a restaurant. tough times.
